pondering what it's all about. i just asked this on another forum: you don't need a reason, but would you consolidate your blades? not to pay bills or please the spouse, just reduce your collection to a few folders, two or three fixed knives, whatever. i have my list and i like the idea. problem is, like everyone else, i have an aquisitions list as well, which runs in opposition to this idea. abstractly, i like the thought,

honestly, my acquisitions list is pretty short. i can't even think of five right now. the bowie, this short sword i'm a huge fan of, and maybe a couple tiny knives, <2" blades. it doesn't just apply to knives, though. i'm generally a 'less is more' type of guy.

you don't need a reason, but would you consolidate your blades?

Well, I recently sold a couple to be able to acquire more Busse family blades. I’ve gotten rid of most of my “inferior” knives. My Rats are all I use now. I haven’t bought another brand knife since. Some knives I kept that were sentimental to me and worth more to me than their dollar value, so I kept them. I get attached to things that are important to me.

I thought I’d never sell a Rat once I got it, and I haven’t so far. Except for the extras that I bought for resell, I mean my personal knives. My collection is larger than some. A few people want to keep it simple, like one chopper, and one smaller one. That’s originally what I planned too, but I got “Rat Fever”. I ended up with several different sizes and types, so I have a “specialized” selection that I can choose from so I have the right tool for the job.

But recently, I thought about what when my collection becomes too similar? For instance, I have a RM and a BR. While the blades are the same, the handles are different and each is suited for a specific use (comfort vs. toughness). But then I thought, what about when I get my SS4? The blade is similar in style to my coot, but the steel is “upgraded”. The handle is somewhat similar being Res-C, and I wondered if I really need both knives. I can’t see my Coot getting much use after I get my SS4. I don’t really want to sell it though, it was the 2nd Rat I ever bought.

So, what I was thinking of doing is offering to sell it to a family member. I have a family member that I think might be interested, but unable to afford it at this time. I thought I could offer to sell it to him at cost ($90) so that he would be able to afford it, and it’d still be in the family so I could have visitation rights. <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/laugh.gif" alt="" />

As soon as I would sell something I'd need that exact blade to save the universe.

It is hard to part with some of these, Like my Desert Jack...I love it, but got a Straight Handled Satin Jack...thicker...different steel...and I like it so much more! But I really like the DJ.....but alas..it is funding a Bowie the moment it sells! So while I hate to see it go...I love to watch what it brings home. Some think you only need 1 chopper...HA!!! I have close to 10 and use 9 of them. All different and all hold a special place. I am trying to get some more EDCs, to find that one that really stands out....still looking!
