From my perspective SR77 only has one competitor, SR101. INFI is not competition because I cannot afford INFI, except when Dan can scavenge some when Jerry's back is turned.
Rich,
Exactly! While i'm sure an FBM could chop like no tomorrow.
Realistically.. Dog Father's combination of price point, res-c handle, steel, and warranty will make it the chopper User of choice for Many! It's basically the next Camp Tramp/Battle Rat.
there's tons of (new) cheaper choppers below it.. and couple choppers above it.. but there seems to be a void.. the Dog Father's alone at this level/price.
ONLY thing at this level i can think of is Ontario Rat7 D2 steel @ ~$115-$130.

From what I have heard of the steel there should be no disappointments. I can think back to a summer where I was given the privilege of running a jackhammer all day in the summer in Houston TX. I had wrung my t shirt out 7 times before 8:30 am. The bit was never in question on the hammer. The next day I was a noodle. Impact it can take. I want to know how it takes an edge and hold it. I am looking at this to replace a hatchet, axe, and a saw for moose hunting. I can afford to loose the weight!!!

D2 is good steel. Like all it has its limitations. You could shoot that question over to Bob Dozier about his heat treating on D2. I did see a review someplace where one of his Special Agent knives shattered under a blow.

I also know it takes a bit to put an edge on D2 and it does keep that edge very well.

Fwiw.. i've been noticing Becker BK9's price has gone up to ~$65-$75.. maybe more.
0170-6C carbon steel iirc.. not sure about heat treat, if any.
Something to do with labor/licensing disputes over at Camillus.
So speculators are snatching 'em up!

I think the test results will be interesting from a couple of perspectives. Obviously, they'll be interesting from an engineering perspective. But they could be interesting from a political perspective as well.

Imagine what would happen if SR77 actually turns out to equal or outperform INFI (or SR101) in one or more tests. Would that send a ripple through the Busse community? Would it create a stampede of knife buyers slobbering their way from the trough to the yard? Would allegiances realign? And how would the powers that be react to that if they did?

Nothing will ever be like INFI, it is simply an amazing steel on all levels. With that said, I think the price to performance ratio of the Dog Father will put all non-INFI knives to shame. Remember...its all about performance that us regular guys can afford.

Dan

I am just about positive that the D2 blade comments were made by Eric Issacson over at Swamp Rat. As a National Sales Manager, he should have a pretty good idea what he's talking about, getting input from guys like Cliff Stamp and other very knowledgeable folks. You might ask him about D2. <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/thumbup.gif" alt="" />
