For those of you who enjoy the Man vs. Wild program on Discovery, there has been much discussion and controversy concerning his knife. In some episodes he uses a dive knife, Gerber Gator, Swiss Army, and others that I cannot identify.Everybody wants a knife like Bear's, it seems. I will be the first to admit that I could not do what Bear does, but I think I could choose a better knife. Now he has his own design for the new season. It costs a fortune. You could get a Busse FBMLE for less. You can see it here http://www.bayleyknife.com/bear.htmToo bad he missed the Yard Keeper. Its just his size. Or maybe he likes stainless. He could have bought an Al Mar SERE or an SOG or any of a bunch of quality 4" to 5" knives I can think of.
Horned, dangerous, and off my medication.

Considering his travel conditions and accommodations one would think he could choose a better far less expensive knife. Definatly to bad he missed the Yard Keeper....and The DFCG.

The Yard Keeper, the HRLM, the Ratmandu, Dumpster Mutt, or SS4 are all hard use small knives that won't break the bank. I think the Busse BATAC would be good, too. I just thought it was ridiculous that he had to have a $720 knife when he had been getting by with < $100 ones. His knife is nice enough, I guess. That must be some magic steel to cost that much. http://michaelwest.dk/knive/rwl34-datasheet.pdf

I suspect that this "Bear" knife idea is more about TV executives and his "machine" cashing in on the survival craze on TV than Bear's actual preference for what he would want or use. I assume his answer to the question, "what is the best knife out there?" would be "the one you have when you need it".

I for one have been hooked on his show from the very beginning (and also my wife...). The show is very exciting to watch and he has lots of tricks up his sleeve. But, you can tell in each episode he has extensive knowledge of the area with facts of trivia on every plant and berry he comes across. The show's producers keep him very informed on where he is and his surrounding conditions.
That knife of his is pretty sweet looking you have to admit! But I'm sure it will become more of a collector's knife than anything else. The Busse's, SR's and SYK's are all great looking knives that definitely are cheaper in price....and they too also have a "cult" following of sorts..hehe.
Next he will probably have a survival book out that will be very popular too - if he doesn't already.

That RWL steel is supposed to be the latest greatest high-tech powdered stainless steel with superior toughness and edge-holding. Mighty expensive, though.

Jerry Hossum has been using it (RWL 34) since 2001. It polishes nice and is easier to work than ATS-34, which it is close to. Or so Jerry says.
