I have never been a huge ax fan, and have preferred a large knife. Then I realized I always had great knives, and cheap axes. So the comparison was not really fair. UNTIL NOW

I picked up a Gransfors Small Forest Ax, and I love this thing. It would shave hair right out of the box. Hacking at wood is like hitting butter

I like that very much. I have been considering that very axe. Very nice!

I've looked at those several times myself. Thanks for the review.

Another thing to add to my ever growing list...

I've got an Estwing I like pretty good but I've always wondered, what would I do if the handle broke... How would one replace a handle on one of these? Has anybody ever run into that situation with an Estwing? Just courious...

Hands down.....the best axes money can buy. I have three myself, excellent choice!

When you care enough to use only the best...stick'em with a SKYCO knife.

Nice looking axe. My Fiskars has worked out well for me, but I would like to try one of those some day.

That is a high quality axe, Brian. Most axes do not come well sharpened.

Horned, dangerous, and off my medication.

The feel of the handle is really cool too. It is obviously hickory, but it is also supposed to be soaked in linseed oil and has a type of beeswax coating, even though it does not feel waxy.

The length is also nice. It is long enough you can get a good two handed grip on it. One handed you can choke up just a bit (3/4 of the length). It is also easy to grip it very close to the head for real detailed stuff. It is sharp enough that I have even made feathersticks gripping it that way. I just dig it.

I just love the traditional look about it.

Of course now I want one bigger and one smaller

I have always wanted a GB axe ,they really are the best there is. I would probably cheap out and get a Wetterling though as they are almost as good but don't have all the expensive hand finishing that goes into a GB. Whether I take an axe and a small knife or a big chopper and a small knife mostly depends on the type of terrain I am in. Right around my house is a mix of nice hard anfd soft woods so it is axe country but farther north in the canadian shield or in the prairie a chopper is much more useful on the thinner vegetation.

I actually found a Wetterling hatchet head under the seat of an old truck and ground the rust off and putt a long straight hawk handle on it. It has not gotten much use since I finished my CS hawk though.
