Hello again dogs! <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif" alt="" />

Got another question, this time about rust removal. A couple weeks ago I spent a few days in some marshy, muskeg filled terrain brushing up on some LANDNAV and happened to be carrying my Zero Tolerance ZT300 folder with me. After many spills in the swampy terrain, and several days of neglect, I opened it up only to notice that it had numerous rust spots on both sides of the blade (the steel is S30V by the way). I tried soaking it in WD40 for several days, and while that MAY have gotten rid of some of the spots, or at least toned them down, there are still many more left. So the question is, what's the best way to get rid of rust on this type of steel?

Thanks in advance for any help.

I use 000 or 0000 steel wool and some oil (rem oil, clp or whatever is in reach) but I don't really concern myself with looks, especially on folders.

Try to find a mild abrasive that is softer than the steel- the rust is softer than the steel it came from so could be removed in some cases by rubbing it hard with a tough bit of wood! This shouldn't mark the sides of the knife but may shift the rust. Failing that super fine paper or green pan scrubbing pads may do the trick..

Memo to self- don't pay extra for S30V steel over 440C.. <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/wink.gif" alt="" />

This year I bought one of those "erasers" they sell at SMKW. It works great for removing rust and stains from blades.

Horned, dangerous, and off my medication.

Flitz works for me.
Also, I have had more luck then I would have thought using WD40 and a rag.

I've used those erasers for years they're great for rust. Be careful on a folder, and try to avoid getting it down into the moving parts. It does have abrasive material in it that could cause extra wear on moving parts if not removed. So my advise is carefully erase with the blade pointed down, making sure to wipe any residue off thoroughly, then wipe it down with Tuf-Cloth to help prevent and protect it from future rust.

I can't believe S30V would rust that easy... <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/ooo.gif" alt="" />

I EDC a small fixed blade made of 1095 everyday and rarely have rust issues even with it... <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/crossfingers.gif" alt="" />

No kidding!

The funny thing is, I was also carrying my Doug Ritter RSK Griptillian (likewise made from S30V) the whole time. It got just as wet but didn't show any rust at all; nor has it ever. <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/confused.gif" alt="" />

I find a hard scrub with oil and a rag works well. I love 440C and it is .18 cromium which is very high. I think the S30V rusted because the conditions were perfect, did it have leather pouch or was it folded so water vapour would stay inside?
