Hello, all! I hope this is an appropriate question for this forum. I'm a newbie here, lookin' for some advice and feedback that I was unable to produce from the forum Search function:

--As an all-arounder, how does the Scrapyard Scrapper 6 compare in handling, function, capabilities and properties to the Ranger Knives RD6, as I am looking to purchase the one or the other--the S6 obviously from eBay or a Blade Forum member.

Of course, any other recommendations and why you recommend them in reference to the two blades are more than welcome. What is your preference? Where do you think each excels, in reference to the other? It appears that many of you have both the Scrap Yard and Ranger Knives, which is why I am posting my question on this forum.

I'll admit I prefer the look of the S6 and the idea of Res-C, but I'm concerned about the extreme blade thickness. Before discovering the Scrap Yard, I really thought 0.25" thickness was as thick as I'd ever want to go in a knife. However, the S6 seems as close as I can get to the original Res-C Swamp Rats, which I discovered woefully two late.

I like the deep belly of the RD6, and in other forums some suggest that 5160 may hold an edge better than S7/SR-77, but none confirm it with experience. I have no doubt that each can take a pounding.

How about their ability (or ability to be modified) for cutting and slicing, within reason for knives of this size?

Thanks for your input.

Kevin

Both bro

I own and use both

Scrappy 6 is wasted with res-c..your really not gonna chop with it..

Rd6?? I do prefer the old style of blade versus the new bowie style, but that is me

Both are well made and both are made by good people

justin is a swell guy to deal with on customs...

Sheesh... Tough one.

I have an Dogfather, Yard Hook, and Dumpster Mutts.

I also have an RD4, RD7, and RD9.

That being said - they're both great knives made by great people.

Scrapyard steel is going to be a little tougher maybe. I'm not a steel expert, but the Busse proprietary heat treatment is the best in the industry.

Both knives have an unconditional lifetime warranty - so breaking them isn't really an issue!

The ResC is great. Very comfortable. You're lacking the skullcrusher pommel obviously, and the different handle options that come w/ Ranger.

The scrapyard crinkle coat finish holds up better than Ranger. You can get Satin finish Rangers for +20 though, which is nice. Gotta take care of them through because they rust fairly quickly if not protected.

Justin does semi-customs cheap. A very good deal.

You won't really notice a whole lot of difference between the .25" vs .285 - a little but not much. Negligible I'd say.

Ranger comes w/ a decent sheath included in the price.

Its really going to come down to a matter of preference as far as the options go. ResC is amazing, then again, Micarta is very nice too. Someone that you might PM if he doesn't reply is "Horn Dog" - he's got an S6 and an RD6 - I have neither, but have a number of knives from both.

You might just want to get one of each <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/wink.gif" alt="" /> Or - maybe wait a week or two since there is an "impending" release from Scrapyard on the way... probably something that will be midsized like you're looking for in there (supposedly 3 knives being release, after a bunch of military orders - so the odds of something 5-7 inches are high).

What's spooky is how you responded so quickly to my post, bld522. I can't find the topic headline on the main index page! (Am I missing something here?)

That said, I greatly appreciate the quick reply. Believe it or not, your remarks were extremely helpful.

Something I neglected to mention is that I'm not a knife collector, so I'm looking to use it. What I have at the moment is a locking SAK that will balance some things out for me. (My SAK appears to be an older version of the Fireman locking pocket knife.) It has been my trusty companion for several years, but I've been feeling for quite some time that I need something more substantial to accompany it.

I've obsessed sufficiently about this new purchase-in-the-making that I have become starved for specifics. I imagine I could even be sold on a Dumpster Mutt if I could overcome my doubts about it's crazy thickness. It just doesn't seem like I could do much more than pry, bang and throw that lil' beast around--as cool as that would be, but as a general camp/field knife I have a hard time with its girth.

I certainly I don't want to keep anyone from commenting just because he or she doesn't have each knife. So, for those who own one or the other, how do you feel your S6 or RD6 manages in comparison to other 5-7 inchers, as well? The more you've used 'em the better...

Again, much appreciated.

If you just want to cut, and don't care as much about the "hard use" aspect, or prying, I'm also a big fan of RAT Cutlery / Ontario RAT - they're worth a look.

The Mutt is pretty thick and is as much prybar as knife. I have 2 of them - one that I EDC sometimes, the other stays in my survival kit. It does cut, but not like a 3/16" blade will.

The Dogfather is the king of the choppers - undisputed heavyweight champion if you will.

The RD's take on a nice edge - I don't have a full height ground Scrapyard blade, mine are all about 2/3 height grind - and have pretty obtuse edges. I'd imagine that the S6 is a better cutter than the Scrappers that I personally have.

I'm pretty interested in seeing what Dan has coming out in this next release - should be some great stuff.

Welcome to the yard.

I don't own a ranger but I do own 2 S6's. They are a good size knife that feels light and right in your hand. Big knife that does not feel like one. Cuts really good for as thick as the blade is.

Super tough!!

Welcome Welcome SH! <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif" alt="" /> I have an S6 and a RD7. IMO the S6 is one of the best camp/field blades out there. I do like the res-c handles for so many reasons, and I do chop/baton with it. I also slice, carve, whittle, and pry with it! Sure if it were thinner it would be easier to do some task with it, but I got it to do everything and it does, at the very least-good enough. My RD7 is a beast and I trust it to do the tough jobs too.

But I feel the S6 (with res-c) feels better in my hand and the balance is superb. Dicemans descriptions of the S6 are right on! It does it all, you'll luv it <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif" alt="" />

Justin at Ranger is a pleasure to do business with, one of the class acts of the knife world, and his blades are semi-customs at production costs. You won't go wrong with either, they both will get the job done. My suggestion is get one, then the other! <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/laugh.gif" alt="" />

I don't have either of the knives you're asking about but thought I'd stir the stew a little. Like Diceman, I like Ontario's Rat knives. I have four of them. I also recently picked up a Swamp Rat M6 that seems to be a good solid piece and it came razor sharp. The M6s are available now at the Swamp Rat shop.

Welcome and good luck.
