I wanted to get a lever action rifle for hunting this year. Since I am sandwiched between Osceola National Forest and the Okefenokee swamp I figured that I have a lot of opportunity to get out and hunt this season. I had my sights set on a Marlin 1894c in .357 magnum. However, when I got there they didn't have any. So I decided to upgrade and I got one of these in .44 magnum: 1894 cowboy

Thanks Paul. It's a jack of all trades rifle, master of none; which of course is exactly what I wanted. You can also load her up with .44 special and go after smaller game.

I had wanted to get a bow for this year. However with the new house and everything else I wouldn't have been able to get the bow in time to really learn it. So I settled for a lever action instead.

Nice rifle there. The lever action is one of my favorites.

Way cool, I read an article about thoes guns being great for HD, at olny 37.5 inches long it's short enough to work indoors. They liked them over an AR, AK, or sub-guns platforms because they are more politicaly friendly, and not the "Deathmaster 2000", it is a John Wayne gun, nothing evil or tactical about that. and like you said very multi-purpose.

I'm looking at Brockmans gunsmithing right now. Apparently his work is suppose to be pretty good, then again so are his prices.

Nice, gotta love the octagon barrel. And it's a Marlin, always a good choice. This will be the first year I'm taking a lever out to the U.P. Got myself a 1953 Marlin in .32 Win. Special. After shooting one, I'm a big fan of the lever gun now. Plus it's a purely American action. Of course you will have to post all the graphic photos after you shoot a deer with the Marlin and gut it out with a Scrapyard <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif" alt="" />.

I've got a deathmaster 2001, that the upgraded version. It's a great rifle, very functional and utilitarian. However, it's also what sits under the bed along with my 12 ga to protect our homestead. With the .44 magnum it's powerful enough for deer, and defense against grizzly if I ever found myself west of the Rockies. However, it's not overly powerful. In addition I can run .44 specials and use it for small game. On my way into work each morning I often see deer, turkey, boar, and on and on.... In florida we divide the season up in terms of Archery, Muzzle loading, and General gun. During each of these seasons what ever is in front of you is fair game and long as you're using a bow during archery season, a muzzle loader during muzzle loading etc.... I wanted a gun that could shoot what's in front of me and not have to worry about being over or under powered.

That was always the unfortunate part about living in Detroit, you really had to dive some distance for decent hunting. Your package is on it's way. You should have it by Wednesday at the latest.

Excellent choice Jerry! I have one of those Marlins and to be honest, I probably shoot it more than any of my other rifles. I like the accuracy, the fast handling of the weapon and the fact that the .44 Mag is real easy to reload.
I hope your new rifle will serve you long and well.
