I have heard reference to knives known as "blackjacks" in various places, including california law. What exactly is this referring to?

Thanks

In days of my youth in Los Angeles, "blackjack" was slang for a home made weapon used to hit someone over the head with. It normally consisted of a slender leather bag filled with lead shot.

There is also a brand name of knives called "Blackjack Knives". If it is not one of these then I have no idea.

Blackjack knives was a short lived operation. They had good product but something on the business side flatlined. They had many models that were really good. Now those same knives are selling on E-bay as collectibles. The fellow that started it was Mike Stewart. He has formed a new company and is alive and kicking. The new company is Bark River Knives.

A blackjack (known in British English as a cosh or sometimes "life preserver") is a small, easily-concealed weapon consisting of a leather-wrapped lead weight attached to the end of a leather-wrapped coil-spring or rigid shaft, with a lanyard or strap on the end opposite the weight..
