I'm sure most of you guys saw this already but a few of the guys from the Bladeforums had a "Busse Beat Down" the other day. They chopped up some 2x4s with plenty of the Busse family knives and made videos. I watched the one for the Dogfather and it looked like it did better than almost any of the others for chopping. But during the video the guy who was using it said something like- 'its not biting, or maybe I'm tired'. But I was unconsciously counting his strikes and it looked like he used 20something to get through the wood and some of the other Busses took many more.
So, I wanted to get impressions here from the Yard. If you own some of these how do you think the Dogfather compares?
Also, I wanted to say that I really like watching these testing videos and props to Ban for posting them.

If he was use to a micarta or g10 handled blade, then the dog father would feel strange since the res-c does a great job of cushioning your hand from the shock!

Wow! The DF is definately a great chopper! I know that many of us have abused ours with insane chopping, Dice for example is one and I am sure Vic will have something to say as well.

Thanks for posting!!!

Just watched a few - but great stuff.

The Dogfather isn't much of a biter because its so wide near the edge - I can agree with that. I need to get out and use my CGFBM still - I keep saying that - but what the Dogfather doesn't have in deep bite, it more than makes up for in comfort. I have no doubt that a Battle Mistress (non fatty) makes deeper cuts and is probably a more efficient chopper - but once you hand goes, you're done... I, for one, plan on standing by my DF!

Prime example of a BM biting a little "too well."

It chopped like a monster, though! I don't have enough experience to say whether or not I'd rather have it bite deep and hang up, or bit a little less deep and be extremely comfortable... Probably the later.

Here's a quote from "Ban" - kinda of clearing up why the Dogfather wasn't listed in his "top" choppers:

That would be me with the Dogfather. I didn't think it did too shabby. This was towards the end of the chopping session so I guess fatigue may have set in some. One problem I did have with it was that it didn't bite deep enough into the wood. Keep in mind that this is a brand spanking new bone stock DF with no edge touchup. I am sure a nice convex edge would have increased its potential by about at least 30-40%. It was actually very very comfortable for me and was very weight forward. The respirene-C handles were easily the most comfortable for me. This knife has a whole lot of potential. Put on a nice edge and it can easily hang with the big boys.

It just doesn't look like it did too well because it was being compared against some highly customized and modified stuff with optimized edge geometry.

Myself I prefer Micarta with Standard Handles or Respirene-C for the big choppers. Comfort wise the Respirene-C was best for me. It just doesn't look as nice as Micarta that is all

That's what I figured...the Res-C seems like it would be much better for impact. I don't have a DF but my S6 is a pleasure to hold. I can easily imagine using it all day for this kind of work.
Just from watching the videos, it didn't look like 'bite' was too much of a problem for the DF. Some of those blades definitely bit deeper but just count the strokes, that DF made short work of that 2x4. Great stuff.

Also, Justabuyer mentioned that the Ratweiler showed no edge damage after the test. Pretty impressive performance from SR-101.

I think the tests showed supremely well what I have mentioned many times in the past: Edge Geometry is VERY important.

Many of the Busse Swamp and Scrap knives ship with way too obtuse an edge.

Great for staying tough and not rolling, but NOT great for performance.

There is a quote by "Ban" on page three of that thread where he sums it up very well.

Basically, he states that a thinner convexed edge will cut much better, but you don't want to over thin the edge if cutting very hard material.

The factory edges are great for cutting cinder blocks. But, I don't cut cinder blocks.

All of the Busse family types of steel are great for chopping. The Dog Father was CLEARLY hindered by it's edge geometry. You can see the blade didn't dig or cut very well at all. It bounced off the wood like a dull blade.

But, notice how well the Camp Tramp did. The video of the custom convexed Camp Tramp speaks LOADS!!!! If the Dog Father had the same edge geometry as the Camp Tramp, the Dog Father would have halved that board in about 8-10 whacks (... if well placed whacks!!! )!

even though I'll concede the DF wasn't sinking like some of the other blades, Ban was noticeably more tired by the time they busted that and a few of the other knives out. you can watch him get more and more winded as the 2x4 gets shorter and shorter. great videos, nonetheless.

Why would anyone enter a chopping contest with a dull chopper? Mine cut good when I got it, but it cuts great now. This Dog Father can CHOP!
