Any other jazz lovers here? If so, who do you like and what kind do you like?

I especially enjoy Brazilian jazz.

I'm not a big fan of most latin jazz, even though they do have some good rhythms. thelonious monk is my all time favorite, and I like wes montgomery a lot, too, but not his big band stuff. I don't like anything bigger than a quintet most of the time.

I live near New Orleans and have been to MANY Jazz bars....honestly, I have never really been impressed. Just not my cup of tea. I don't mean to rain on ya'lls parade so please don't take it as such. I would rather listen to someone scratch their fingernails on a blackboard......or my back.

Ah haa. I knew I would't be alone here. You guys seem to favor straight ahead jazz, with the exception of Wes Mongomery I think. He's fusion isn't he?

In the 50's or 60's when everyone elso was listening to Elvis, I was lovong Stan Getz and Astrud Gilberto's Girl From Ipanema.

Of the other artists you guys mentioned, I have some of Wyton and Branford Marsalis's albums. Also recently picked up some piano stuff by Ramsey Lewis that's mighty fine.

When it comes to improvizational jazz, I agree. I need some melody to enjoy it.

I like live jazz played in a bar that is raw and not rehersed. I am not a big fan of modern jazz at all. I prefer old school jazz, swing and bebop. If it sounds polished, I don't like it. My favorite bass players are Charles Minus and Jaco Pastorius. I like Miles Davis, Dizzy Gilespie, Charlie Parker and Duke Ellington. That being said, I listen to a very wide range of music, jazz, metal, punk, country and everything in between as long as it has real emotion behind it and it's not contrived. My musical roots are in blues and that's where my passion lied as a bass player years ago.

If anyone ever gets a chance to hit up Croce's in downtown San Diego on a Friday or Saturday night their jazz jams are improv and a great time.

wes montgomery did some stuff in a trio named, oddly enough, the wes montgomery trio, that's really great. I'm not a super big jazz nerd, so I could be wrong, but I don't think he did any fusion stuff. I know he did a lot of stuff with larger bands, though. I can't stand most fusion, makes my skin crawl.
girl from ipanema lives outsides the world of jazz, it's such a total classic. I could listen to that all day.
I have a bunch of old LPs that belonged to my father when he was alive, but I need a new stylus for my turntable. I really like vocal stuff like sarah vaughn and della reese, too.

i love pretty much all music. but personally like bands like" The Devil wears prada" "the chariot" "norma jean" "After the sirens" "underoath" and "job for a cowboy" (dont ask why i put them all in quotes) all that stuff. but i enjoy jazz. not any certain type, i just like it in general. i play the drums and jazz drummers or jazz in general is just so intricate. i love it.

I still have Dave Brubeck's "Take Five" on vinyl somewhere. Trouble is, I have not kept up with the modern Jazz scene. Some of the Jazz I hear on the Weather Channel appeals to me, but I don't know who the artists are. If we had a jazz radio station here, I'd listen to it.
