Hi Guys...first post... I just saw the DMLE for sale (perfect timing as I only found out about these great knives yesterday !)...but I prefer a black coated blade... Should I wait for availability of the regular DM, or get the DMLE since this knife design will be continued ? http://www.scrapyardknives.com/ubbthread...part=2&vc=1Many thanks ! Welcome to the Yard JohnBee!
The original DM is a limited edition and there are no more planned in that configuration. There were a few black handle with sage released at Blade West but never offered in the store.
All I can say from past history is you better get while the gettin' in good! Or be prepared to pay more in the secondary market.

It is generally considered doubtful that the original coated Dumpster Mutt (DM for short) will be re-released. But, you never know.
Busse Knives, Swamp Rat Knives and Scrap Yard Knives are all related.
The general policy for all of the above companies is clearly: Won't tell. They seem to like the mystery and suspense of the unknown. We are lucky to get a couple of days notice.
In many/most cases, once a blade has been released and not sold for a while, the company will not sell them again.
However, sometimes they seem to keep back a small quatity for shows and sometimes those are sold via what are called Extravaganzaaa sales.
Sometimes, it seems they actually produce a few more.... they won't tell whether it is old stock or a new run.
They are very secretive, protective and VERY non-committal about most things related to their business.
If you really want one, it is probably not too wise to wait and see.
Either purchase one from the store if you can, or purchase one from the secondary market.
The DMs have not been crazy priced on the secondary market. But, they may sky-rocket up for no apparent reason.
The Swamp Rat Bog Dog's used to sell for $88.95 or something. They were in stock at the Swamp Rat store for a long time. Then they were gone. They stayed low for a few months, then boom - they were selling for $250 - $300.
Demand economics are a funny thing.
My recommendation is to purchase the DM-LE.
If you do not like it for some reason, you can sell it and should not likely loose any money or very little. More likely you can pocket a little.
However, you could also probably use it to trade for what you want.
Good luck.

Welcome to the Yard, John. You probably did the best thing. The Urban Mutts that were at Blade West are nice. They have a slightly different handle than the original DM, and some of them have a flat grind like the DMLE. I am hoping they will be offered in the store soon, but you never know. As Bors says, there are two kinds of dogs, the quick and the hungry. At least you got the rarest of them all. And the prettiest. Congrats.
Horned, dangerous, and off my medication.

Thank you very much for the comments kraz, horndog, and knifeguy...I just went ahead and purchased it, so I was lucky indeed...good points about the rarity and nature of Busse/SwampRat/ScrapYard, I was not completely aware of how they sold knives...
The DMLE was a bit pricier than what I had in mind, but the only other fixed blade I own is a $9.50 Mora...so its time to treat myself...
I cant wait for it to arrive, and will post pics <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif" alt="" />
Best regards, JB...

Congrats John - and welcome to the forum. You won't be in the least bit disappointed with your new knife - tough as heck and a beauty as well!
Its been several months since the last blade release, so your timing couldn't have been better.
Looking forward to seeing your pictures when you get your new Mutt.
And... most importantly...
WELCOME TO THE YARD!!! Be sure and drop in from time to time - great people here, you'll learn a lot from them(as I have)!!

When in doubt, and you can buy directly from the store, pick it up if you have the funds. You should always be able to sell it on the secondary market for what you have in it. That's been my experience.

I am sure there will be plenty of dogs that will swap you a coated DM for your satin version if that's what you wanted to do !!!!
