Nice rant, Knifeguy! I feel your pain. I also expect a new knife to come very sharp. Buck does it. Cold Steel usually does. Some SOGs do, some don't. My Bark River came scary sharp, as did the Bayley. Now I know how to sharpen a knife, but I would expect a "high end" knife to come that way.

cold steel . . . maybe sometimes. way back before i even knew what Busse was, i used to get cold steel knives. the peacekeeper's edge was the sharpest factory edge i've ever seen, but the rescue tanto was probably the dullest.

How much cash more would you be willing to pay for a scrapyard knife with a really well done edge?

Maybe less than Dan would have to charge for the extra hand work. It would increase the price by $15 to $30 per unit, depending on the knife size and just how finished the edge is. It would really slow down production. At least that's my best guess. The factory edges are getting better overall, though, except for the Yard Keeper, which was probably rushed for Blade. I kidded the guy (Bob?) with the long hair when I bought my yard keepers at Blade about the edges. I aked him if they were done on concrete steps just before the show. But my new Urban Mutt came with a decent "utility" edge. The Yard Hook and S6s I got at Blade had decent edges, too.

The main thing Dan or more importantly his grinder needs to remember is the knives need to be able to cut and chop wood. We all have better tools for concrete block abuse than our yard knives so why grind the edges thick to be concrete killers???

I can't see that a shallower grind would put the price up much- it seems to me the edges are put on with one or two passes of a coarse slack belt, so just thin out the angle a bit...

I was thinking of the added cost of a highly polished edge. That takes more than a couple of passes on the belt. But for just a more acute angle at the same grit they are using now, you are right.

That's my thought- a thinner edge is easier to bring up with ceramic sticks or sandpaper. A Sharp-maker or Lansky crock stick box does wonders on a sensible basic edge, but on yard factory thick you have to re-profile first...
