has anyone played around with putting a patina on SR-77? I'm thinking I'd like to try it on one of the DMLEs when they show up.

Not yet, but I would love to see what a vinegar bath will do... or maybe some cold blue over night...

Well , this is my first attempt at a patina on my RD4. I used mustard and vinegar and applied it several different times to try to get a layered look. I don't really like it but it's my first try and you gotta start somewhere. Be kind now, here we go. dom, I really do like it on the left side of the blade. looks really cool. and, um, there's also a patina on the right side, too! <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif" alt="" />
I know it works well on 1095, I'm just wondering how it'll be on SR-77. I know absolutely nothing about steel characteristics, so there's about a 100% chance I'll totally bork my blade. but since it's in the name of science I have no choice!!!

I have no SR77 blades but have established a heavy paitine on an O1 blade through everyday use. I don't consider it attractive or ugly...it's just there. On several kuks, I did the vinegar bath thing in order to confirm the blade had been differentially heat treated and see where the hardened part of the blade was.

I like the right side (top pic) better than the left side it gives the knife an old look. The left side.. well it kinda just looks like you squirted mustard on it.
