Kind of funny, a few years back I use to work a hard job where I ate 6-8000 calories a day cuz I burned so much and I thiught I would never have to go to a gym,( plus teaching a kids MMA class) now I go 4-5 times a week for 1.5 - 2 hours each time. But the push up thing has been a new thing for me- I do 3x per week 100 push ups per time 4 sets of 25 1st set is index and thumbs together in front of me (close together) set no. 2 is shoulder width 3rd set is on a set of dumbells (the six sided ones) so I get a deep press and 4th set changes, maybe on the knuckles, folded in wrists or elevated feet.
My bench is pretty good and in 2 years I put on 10" in my chest!! and increased my flat bench by 120# Now I am slimming down so my strength is down too. Oh yea, the push ups help with reps but not really with strength unless you don't do any bench work.
Something to try: I use a product called NO Explode (I like the lime flavor) it is a pre workout drink that gives you a ton of extra energy without making your heart beat out of your chest. Good stuff. Time at the gym is about the best time of my day, good friends I feel good about myself, and I stay out of trouble! everyone i know uses no-xplode. i'm considering it myself, though i'm not too big on supplements. the two hours at the gym is the peak of my day, too.

I bought a pair of these things last week... I can only do about 10 pushups, LOL, but they really reduce strain and pressure on the wrists...to balance on basketballs ? Id do more damage than gain I think... Using the dumbells dose the same thing I think pushups are a great workout tool I use to only be able to do 10 or so , now I can do 25 or more!, takes time but worth the effort! beat me to it. i use the hex dumbells because of a wrist injury. i'll do pushups heavily on periods i can't get to the gym, like vacations. four sets of fifty before breakfast will usually get the blood flowing and the chest pumped. then i'll try half a set of diamonds and/or with the feet elevated. the pullup is my paradigm exercise. i tell anyone who asks for fitness advice to get a pullup bar and to stop eating preservatives.

I use the hex dumbells as well, like you say they reduce the stress on the wrists and give more variety. I elevate my feet on a bench and alter the width etc of the bells each set !

this has been one of the silliest posts we have had in awhile. I enjoyed it.
I had a set of those pushup bars awhile back. A friend borrowed them; you all know how that ended.
