This is the best comparison I have seen on this forum, Jerry. We live in similar terrain, but I have to say that having spent quite a few days and even nights in the swamps, that I'd take a big bowie, kukri, or machete over an axe. There is little need for the chopping power of an axe there. The RTAK, Ontario Survival Bowie, any good machete, the old thin 10" CS Kukri are great there. The DF is a bit too heavy for that, but it would work. The new Ratweiler and a lockback would be perfect. I leave the axe back in camp or in the boat or jeep. A good lockback or a nice small fixed blade like the SS4, YK, Bravo-1, DM, or HR and you are set for anything. This is based on my own experiences in such terrain and I've caught a lot of grief for carrying such big a** knives from fellow hunters....until we needed it! But if I had to carry just one knife, it would be the Scrapper 6. It will do it all.

Great review!
I think the Res-C helped in the lasing since it would give a bit allowing it to conform to the shape of the spear handle. Plus ist natural grippyness would help! <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif" alt="" /> That's what I figured as well.

And I agree that for swamp work a hatchet is too much. And once you get into mangroves and hammocks that we've got around here I wouldn't even want a machette, I'd want a chainsaw. However, I still feel that outside of this area a hatchet and 5ish inch blade will carry you through just about anything. Right now I've got a piggyback sheath on order that will carry the Ratweiler and Swamp Warden. That combo should easily carry me through just about anything around here and then some. If I didn't pick up the swamp warden then my trusty SAK would be my small blade companion, heck it still might.

Recurves rule!
I saw a great show on pygmy hunters in central africa and they had some neat knives and spears. The show was about a organization that checked to see if they had abandoned their traditional hunting practices so they showed lots of trapping and spearing. There was one really good part where the hunter had a wild boar in his trap and it would be able to break free in a couple of minutes so he had to act fast. His spear had a 7 to 9 inch chunk of machete steel on the end and it buckled the first hard jab and he quickly straightened it and finished off the boar. I would hate to have to fight that boar with just a pointy wood end.
Maybe it would not make sense for a survival application but a knife like a bushman or even car keys would make a great spear end.

I want to pick up a bushman. I'm really curious to see how well it does in the outdoors. It's aparently fairly respectable among the Coldsteel products.

Great review and pics Jerry! <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/cool.gif" alt="" /> <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/thumbup.gif" alt="" />
I think it was a nice complement to Vic's review too. I enjoyed both a lot!
I'm glad I have my Hook and Guard, and very glad I got a Ratweiler. <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/cool.gif" alt="" />
I really need to get a Ranger some day though... <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/crossfingers.gif" alt="" />

Another thing to consider is that it might be dangerous to carry a sharpened spear with you. If the ground you're traversing is diffucult the risk of injuring yourself on a sharpened stick might be too great. IIRC Meriwether Lewis carried a picaroon as a walking stick on his cross country trip. Once he had just shot something for dinner when he was charged by a grizzly. Empty rifle! Oops! Lewis lit out for a stream and waded in. Then he presented old Ep with a spear point to his nose, as the bear entered the water. His journal recorded that “The gentleman refused the combat.”
