So who here has taken the coating off the blade, How hard was it to take off and what did you use. Pics?
Has Anyone put a Satin finish on the blade by hand?
I was Hoping to put a Satin finish on a Dumpster Mutt by hand.
Thanks
-Nick

Another vote for Vic here. He also uses scotch brite wheels to speed things up.

Here are a couple of blades he did a while ago:

I think KnifeGuy's Dumpster Mutt looked better. It's a lot of work. I didn't bother sanding the rough parts. I just buffed them a little. I was concentrating on the edge I wanted.

It chopped down this pine tree in just a couple of whacks.

Horned, dangerous, and off my medication.

I have not stripped a Scrapyard blade but I have done my MOD4 Survival and also my Ka-Bar D2, both by hand as I have no power tools.
Here is my MOD4, with a little more effort I'm sure I could get it even better !

(Can I someone with no skill and no belt Sander Strip the Dumpster Mutt?).

Probably not.

Hello Nick, and welcome to The Yard.

There is NO ONE here who is more blade challenged than me.

NONE.

I followed Horn Dogs solution of going to Wal Mart and buying a thick stripper smearing it on,letting it soak in for about 30 minuets, then wipe it off.

Did my Howling Rat from Swamp Rat Knives and my Dog Father form Scrap Yard Knives Company. Both turn out perfect with no trouble at all.
Not a lick of the Combat Grade coating left behind. The blades are not Satin or Mirror finished under the coating. They are actually not finished at all. Just sharp blades of metal. I have no idea why I removed the protective coating on those two knives of mine but I did.
They are now naked. And.... well I wish that I owned a buffing wheel and a pound of jewelers rouge. I'd try my hand at butchering a finish of sorts into the metal now that I have exposed the protected metal.
I still have no idea why I did that? My wife added insult to injury the moment I was done and proudly presented them to her for her approval. She had the audacity to say

"Didn't they put that protective coating on them for a reason?"

Uh, talk about bursting my bubble. I wanted them to be so beautiful and all I ended up with is unprotected metal that the knife manufacturer didn't intend for me to have.

Have at it Nick! Nothing could be simpler!

Except finding the reason I did it in the first place.

I miss my Combat Grade protective coating,a act I am certain NOT to do again.

There is the greatest bunch of knife knutz here in The Yard that you will EVER find on the planet. Enjoy your time here Nick and please enjoy the humor! This place is dripping in funny comments and posts! But remember it is a family forum!

Peace.

Dave

The MOD 4 probably had a little finishing done as did the Ka-Bar. The Busse-made knives and some other combat knives are really rough on the unground part under the coating. I don't want to discourage anyone from doing a satin finish on one, but know what you're getting into. I have yet to get a complete satin finish all over on any of mine, but some are close. That is why when the satin DMLE was offered, I got it without hesitation. I am happy with my buffed up "competition grades" as they are, but they cannot compare to a factory satin finish. Stripping them is easy. The paint stripper does that part. It's the sanding that takes a long time, even on a belt sander.

Horned, dangerous, and off my medication.

Tell ya what Vic that Ka-Bar is harder to polish up, I think it's because it's D2 !
