Jap cruisers are awesome deals. Touring bikes that people took on one ride and never took it out of the garage again are usually nice expensive bikes that are great commuters.
80's superbikes like the GS1000 and cb900f's are less than a grand and usually just need tires and battery.
Streetlegal dirtbikes with street tires are cheap on gas and insurance and the most fun you can have with a helmet on.

I ride a 1997 BMW 1100GS. It is a big enduro type bike. Ive ridden all over the US and into Canada and Mexico with it. I has been a great bike and has never let me down (37000 miles). It takes a beating and just comes back for more, kind of like my scrapper 6.

I know I'm a little off topic, but I couldn't resist because y'all talk about motorcycle.

I've got two ATV's (DS650 BAJA 2002 and Suzuki Vinson 2006) and I sold them because I moved to California. Too complicated to deal with US Customs and DMV to get a license plate on a imported OHV. I'm currently in process to buy a new one, a sport ATV, model DS650 BAJA X 2007.

So, here some pics:

My ATV is the orange one. I'm at the far left (red).

I think my friend is having a little trouble to fire it up (no pun intended):

I love playing in the mud:

This mud hole was a little deeper that I thought:

Hope you enjoyed it ;-)

Sweet!
I dig the retro looks!.. bobbed tail, flat black paint, even the rims/tires.. Triumph tried that not too long ago w/ their Bonneville.. dunno how their sales went.
But THAT looks like it would be a hit!

i loved the speedmaster. it was bonneville america with the black treatment and mag wheels. if only it had a v-twin. the night-rod variation:
