Hi Pic thread

I am about to get my first HI piece....a BOLO. I watch the DOTD, but am really confused about all the names. Some of the pieces really look good and I would love to have, but again...I don't know what to call them.

I've been pushing for Swamp Rat or Scrapyard to release a khukuri in SR-101 or SR-77 for some time now. An INFI one would be cool, but Busse would probably charge $1k for it.

BTW, I have an HI 18" Ang Khola khukuri and love it. Chops better than an axe.

No offense, but the Cold Steel khukuris were a complete joke compared to the stuff put out by HI and a couple of the other Nepalese manufacturers. The CS ones are more like big curved knives than actual khukuris and do not chop even half as well as the real thing.

the best deal on an HI khukuri is on blade forum. there is a Himalayan imports forum which sales seconds and khukuris with no problems at a discount. I bought an 18 inch ang khola for only a 100 dollars and it is not a second. of coarse ai had to watch the forum for a while before i got lucky.

HI is alot bigger, which I like but the khukuri palace khuk is still a half inch thick and differentialy heat treated and cheaper. dotted panawal is a full tang ang khola.

I agree with Unsub, the Extrema Ratio khukris are a sweet design.

all of these came from the him imp forum on bf. on top is the sgian dubh, a special item not on the regular production lineup. next, the c-thru 18" ruler. third is the ganga ram, a big bad chopper i got brand new with the full warranty for only $60!!! they go for $150 at the story but yangdu's best buys rule. bottom is one i'm willing/trying to part with for some cash or trade, the D-1. it's too pretty for me to use and there've only been about eight or so of these made. the picture really doesn't do it justice, it has that liquid glossy polish like a t1000 and she's a thick piece of double fullered spring steel with a very pretty octagonal handle. no safe queens, that's pretty much the bottom line, so she's gotta go. dog father will take her place.

with chopping ability like that.. those Must be some carbon blades! so how do they get that polished bright shine and have it stay like that? pretty amazing finishes on those!

if i knew how to get a polish like this i'd....umm....tell you how. one of these days i'll get around to posting this thing on a trade or sale forum.

They're made from the leaf springs of trucks, which is 5160 carbon steel, a super tough alloy.

If you go to the HI site, they have pics of how they're made. They heat them in a charcoal grill, forge them with a hammer on an improvised anvil, perform a differential heat treat using a bucket of charcoal and water poured by hand from an old tea pot, then do the final grind on an old grinding wheel that is attached to an old bicycle mechanism where one guy pedals and the other guy grinds. The mirror polish is achieved by putting some finely powdered natural stone in a piece of cloth and rubbing by hand. Simply amazing and tough as nails. The ang khola models are 3/8-1/2" thick, convexed, and virtually indestructible.
