Congrats. It's easier with a larger ferro rod that puts out larger/hotter sparks. Here's one I did using only shredded inner tree bark:





It only took me a couple tries. I've also done it with fatwood shavings.

Yeah, and I always said I didn't need to do well in school either. Graduated high school w/ a 3.5 or so. Went to college and failed out, left with a GPA of 2.2. Mostly C's, that is. Now I'm battling my old GPA, and wish like hell that I didn't screw around with school almost ten years ago. Here I am with a 3.88 GPA, which is drug all the way down to a 3.25 cumulative, because I didn't think school was that big of a deal or that I'd ever need it. You may decide later on in life that you don't want to be a CarpenTer and will be kicking your own a$$ over your crappy grades (because... "mostly C's" is crappy, bro). I'd be getting in to an Ivy League law school had my 1st two years GPA been as good as my last two. I'm going to have to settle for a state school at this point.

If I could go back to when I was your age, I'd be pulling all A's and maybe an occasional B - not too much work, but a huge reward.

I'd recommend it to some, and not others. It was right for me. That doesn't mean that it's right for everybody, of course.

No single route will fit all people ideally.

I wish I would have tried harder in college. I had a hard time getting past the fact they were teaching me stuff that was outdated already. <shrug>

Oh, and accounting just didn't work for me either.

I found the darkroom smell (at the Porter College darkroom, at UCSC) so bothersome that I had to take my gal elsewhere.

That said, such opportunities, during high school and college, should be carefullly considered by the would-be drop-out.

Best to keep all doors open in my experience - I almost wasn't able to pull my stuff together due to past mistakes. I'm still not in the clear, yet. Should find out which law schools I'm getting accepted to in the next two weeks. Haven't heard back from any of the 3 that I applied to, yet.
