i'm contemplating a new flashlight, but am having trouble deciding which one. i've salivated over the fenix p3d and the surefire e2l for a while, but am now debating between two surefires, the e1l and the l1 lumamax. hmm... one of those, or a rat rc4? man, life is just full of tough decisions!

while I don't own any of those lights, I can offer a practical perspective. Many brands like fenix do amazing things with AA batteries, which are quite cheap. Surefires, on the other hand, run on a specialized battery that (correct me if I'm wrong) is much more expensive. While the surefire brand is trusted and has a lot of cache, you're better off in the long run with a AA flashlight because of all the money you'll save. Its kinda like choosing a car with good gas milage

the new led bulbs get amazing run times. my 6p and g2 leds will burn for 11+ hours on one set of batteries. at that rate, i'll go through, oh, maybe 4 a year or so.

you're right though, double and triple a batteries are quite a bit cheaper than the lithium ones.

what's nice about CR123s is they have a really long shelf life 10+ years and they don't leak. AA and AAA alkaline are old bad news but AA AAA eneloops are a different animal, good shelf life, low self discharge, never leak and rechargeable.

CR123s are getting cheaper, their going under 1 usd now, for good ones. You can get cheap/chinese ones cheaper but your asking for trouble!
