Beautiful work.
I've never heard of grinding slate, as opposed to flintknapping obsidian/chert/etc. Fascinating. If you do some websearching, you can find ground slate artifacts from all over the world. Slate grinding is in general an older technology. Many types of stone grind well, slate just happens to be outstanding for this purpose because it fine grained, soft, and it breaks in useful flat sheets. Knapping produces superior cutting edges, but it took more time to discover the technique. Akin to grinding is pecking, where a shape is slowly whacked out of a large stone using a smaller, harder one by pulverizing the stone at point of impact to dust. Hammers, axes and grinders were generally made by pecking Why do you prefer grinding soft stones to knapping hard stones? I haven't got a local supply of flint, obsidian etc. Slate is common stuff. If anybody wants to send me rocks, I'm very interesting in practicing. No. Beautiful pictures there . I see why your avatar is carrying those lenses now. This is how you support your knife hobby, I assume? Wish I had some good gear. Here's mine since we're sharing, be gentle. http://momaw.kikaimegami.com/photos/

Oh, man...
I just threw away about 10 pounds of obsidian, deciding that I didn't have time to futz around with learning to knap, right now. I'm not sure whether I'll be going back to that area until next Summer, but if I do, I'll pick up some obsidian for you.
Thanks for the explanation.
I like your pictures.

Oi. Never throw anything out. That's what they make sheds for!
(though I hear acute packratism tends to be mostly a New England thing)

I don't own much. I have fit everything I own into a 5'x5'x8' storage locker, and the locker was about 3/4 empty, when I had everything in it.
Most of what I own is books, camera gear, and outdoor adventure gear, by the way.
A few months ago, I was preparing to move to the North East. It never happened, and probably never will....
Where in the North East are you?

This afternoon having a very nice IPA from Boulevard, Double Wide I.P.A., 750ml, 8.5% ABV, highly recommended. Will go great with the steak/brat's grilling up. Anyone else?

Second brew for the day. A Tyranena Stone Tepee Pale Ale, 12oz., 5.75% ABV, very tasty.
