I watched a show not too long ago in the Military Channel that had a guy in the States making a Japanese blade with modern technology and the other guy had a Japanese master sword maker make one the traditional way. It was mentioned that the folding process was to get the best steel possible. The test showed the Japanese made sword worked out only slightly better and it was due to the hand polished finish. The show was really good.

Can you imagine what it would be like to go back in time with modern steel. The person who had the modern steel swords would be like a God since they would hold up so much better.
