On a side note, it sounds like Andy really knows what his bigger blades are
capable of. I think it is very important to have that kind of experience before a situation arises that requires that type of use. Wouldn't it suck if you had to baton in that manner in a remote location, and broke the tip off? Yeah, I wanted to make sure that didn’t happen, so I wanted to fully test it myself in adverse weather conditions, beating on it as hard as I could, through tough frozen knotty hardwood. Because if I had any problems, I’d rather they be in my backyard than in the woods where my life could depend on it. I wanted to be able to have full confidance in the ability of my knives.

Of my larger knives, I have only had a chance to give 1 that level of beating. Simply because I have not had time to do the new ones yet. That 1 that I have beat is my favorite, because I really know what it can do, and I can trust it. I am sure I will have some new favorites too, when I get some time in with the wood on them <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif" alt="" />

As far as the original topic I feel batoning techniques qualify.
I don't think you have to worry about the handles of your knives Andy but if I was stuck out in the bush I would be more carefull. The theory is that since the handle is above the impact the pressure goes down and misses the handle.
I think the SS4 would make a great bushcraft blade. It is the right size and is tough as hell with a terrific handle. All it needs is the leather sheath with the firesteel pocket and your ready to bushcraft.

Did you see the post on BF about the chipped DF? Looks like a defect in the manufacturing and a one of a kind break, but it did happen in wood.
