I keep thinking I ought to buy a bigger heatsink and crank the multiplier on my E8400 processor. Apparently they have serious overclocking overhead. Some people have reported over 4ghz on the things; double their stock frequency. The e8400 is a made overclocker. A good heat sink is important, but you could probably increase the voltage only very slightly and get some fairly reasonable results. The real trick can often be the RAM timings. At the higher ends of overclocking, solid, stable RAM is just as important. In any event, when you push the limits, you can go through a lot of system lockups and BIOS resets while you are trying to find a stable level of performance. It can be tedious, but fun, too. I'm cautiously optimistic, since my memory is running at the more aggressive "2T" timings right now instead of the standard "2.5T". Apparently that's a good thing? Memory timings are seriously arcane.

Yes "tighter" RAM timing is definitely good, because you will actually have to loosen those timings as you overclock the system.

Definitely a step up to the more extreme "let's see what it can do" kind of level Liquid nitrogen is what the most extreme overclockers use, but those systems are used for 100% show-off benchmarking only.

There's an interesting culture of "silent pc" enthusiasts, too. They focus on making a PC as quiet and efficient as possible. It's actually impressive what one can do with air cooling and quiet fans these days.
