Morning discoveries:

1.) A charred slice of pumpkin stem is a fabulously effective ember. Add it to the base of your tinder pile, and you'll get a big head start on building some thermal mass.

2.) A chimney of birch bark can get a fire going very quickly. Just rip a biggish sheet off a downed tree, bend a sharp angle in it, and prop it on the ground with your tinder pile at the base inside the angle and your kindling stacked around it. The tall vertical surface encourage updraft, and the bark itself will catch easily with all that heat flowing past it.

Fire is always fun. <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif" alt="" />

Strange question that maybe somebody can answer given the number of folks here that are, or were, military. Google is being unhelpful. <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/frown.gif" alt="" />

Topic came up: How agile are helicopters? Can they effectively dodge fire aimed at them?

I pointed out that they can maneuver in both X and Y axes relative to the direction they are actually headed, the question is, how FAST. Somebody pulled 20km/h out of the air but didn't have a source. I started looking for data on Apaches, and the only relevant measurement I can find is maximum climb rate (990 meters per minute/59km per hour for AH-64A). It doesn't say how fast it can go from "zero to 59", which would be its actual ability to dodge. Nor can I find a measurement for maximum lateral speed (side-slipping) or lateral acceleration.

So I'm hoping somebody can give me some idea of how well these things can actually dance. Doesn't have to be an Apache, or even US equipment, I just need some hard numbers.
