After further analysis, I'm pretty much certain it was the oil. And the smell has faded considerably over the past few days, it's almost gone. So if anyone wants to safe queen a scented one, make sure your safe is air tight.

I will have to massacre some pine or cedar logs to descent my DF when it arrives.

Oh the fresh sent of pine and the sweet smell of cedar on the blade, now that’s something to envision.

The oil does have a slight odor. I would not say that it stinks. Justin Gingrich used a gun oil on the blade when I bought my TFI. I believe it was CLR or something. I liked it. Of course I think that gun oil and Hoppe's No.9 gun solvent should come as cologne. <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif" alt="" />
