Momaw on the scene...
No truck disaster stories to relate though, or car pictures. No news of any kind. My thoughts at the moment are mainly 1.) the bizarre fetish for tail cap switches in high end flashlights, even for flashlights that look incredibly awkward to hold in an overhand fist and have no bash-enhancing features; 2.) the ongoing insanity that prevents the electronic industry from adopting a standard sized, user replaceable, cheap, li-ion battery cell.

Momaw - You might like this thought.
I am considering getting either 1 or two Fenix TK40 lights and gutting them. My plans for them are to rewire them as high powered driving lights on my bike. Their current draw is fairly low which is vital as I do not have much in the way of extra power for accessories on the bike.

You don't like any of the purpose-built LED bike lights? Though I guess I haven't seen any purpose-built ones that are as bright as "enthusiast" flashlights.

Was looking at some and was not impressed. Multi led clusters of cheap ones.
I want as bright as possible with minimal drain. From what I could find, the tk40 draws a hair over 2 amps at peak in turbo mode and about a quarter of that in high mode. As an extra bonus, the tk40 is already designed to take 12v input. I just need to find out if it can handle a range of voltages up to about 14.4v without trouble. Being on a moving vehicle, cooling won't be a problem for it.

14.4 volts is useful, 4 cells of li-ions if you're making your own battery pack for this project? How were you planning on charging the pack up?
I keep looking at the possibility of making an external battery pack for my laptop, a heavy brick-like device that's made of new low-self-discharge NiMH cells. I don't often use my laptop mobile, but when I do, I need it to run for a long time. And I hate the way li-ion cells degrade on the shelf, unlike NiMH which lose strength based on how many times you use them instead of how old they are. The major problem as I see it is the charging of the battery. I could just use a whole bunch of D cells and use a regular consumer charger, but it sounds tedious. It would be more elegant to have a charger that could handle the whole pack, but that sort of thing is outside my comfort zone.
Yikes, look at the time skip. I got distracted by a technology called DataGlyphs. Kind of like bar codes but a heck of a lot more amazing.
