I'm a former corrections officer and a serving police officer and have found a few novel items recently the first was a disposable lighter that had been hollowed out to conceal a sharpened 6 inch /15cm nail it would have penetrated a light jacket etc The second was a Stanley blade that hed been glued into a plastic card wallet so when gripped it would push the blade out to allow the user to inflict slash wounds There have been a variety of others but the best was the the sealed end of a tootpaste tube sharpened to inflict slash wounds I was wondering what was the most novel concealed blade you guys have found call it professional interest

jd01. Oddly enough I just started a job at a prison today. I'm teaching a GED course for offenders. And I'm excited about going to see the "shiv board" next week in the wardens office. I got to go to solitary this afternoon. The only thing that I'm really bummed about is that they won't let me toss a cell like I want to.
Peace Jerry

I'm a former Jailer current Reserve Cop (i'm back in college, finishin' up b4 I get a real job <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif" alt="" /> ) - we used to have an occaisonal safety razor not get turned back in, later found w/ the head snapped off, and the blade melted to the handle to be used as a slashing tool. We also had jailers who would give out the actual soda cans during commissary instead of dumping them in cups, and not get them all back. You can imagine how easy that would be to fashion in to a blade. But, since most of the fine citizens in the jail hadn't been sentenced, they were fairly well behaved. I'd imagine that its not that way in a prison. Our only real problems came from the "shuttle" inmates who were being extradited - just staying w/ us for a few days between shuttles - we had one guy that took apart a faucet and was going to club ME with it. Luckily for me, since I treated all of my inmates w/ respect, and one of them SNITCHED on the A-HOLE that was going to knock me out when I was bringing dinner chow around. Our jail was over 100 years old, and wouldn't be too hard to get out of if you had the jail keys - I'm sure that is what motivated him. I haven't found anything on the street other than actual knives. But, I'll always remember that inmate that saved my @ss, just because I was the only guard that ever treated him like a "person." My biggest fear is needles though - I'd rather get shot or cut than get AIDS or Hep.

I was recently watching one of those prison specials on MSNBC and saw the most interesting weapon made from a non-weapon. They made shanks out of cellophane. They saved them from their commissary packages. They cut down the edges of the packages until they had flat sheets of it. Then they stacked the cellophane sheets several layers thick, and rolled them up and held them rolled with a rubberband. Then they’d start a fire, and heat it, then quench it in some cold water, and repeat over and over until it was hardened and melted to the shape they wanted. Then they could sharpen the point on the cement. They also made zip guns, using tightly rolled up paper for the barrel several layers thick. The propellant was ground up matches, with loose nuts, bolts, nails, rocks and stuff for the projectiles. Then there’s the simpler stuff like shanks from bedsprings, toothbrush weapons (shank or melted with razor blades attached, etc.) etc… This PDF file would interest you if you haven’t seen it. It makes good sense to treat people with respect so long as they don't see kindness as weakness. Inmates are very good at improvised weapons. I learned how to roll up a newspaper ,fold it in half and the bump on the end is as hard as oak. The arayan brotherhood are considered to be the best group of hand to hand fighters including Delta Force or Seals. I am glad I don't have to work in the prisons around here as TB is a huge problem and unlike Hep or Aids is airborne.

The Aryan Brotherhood is being shut down for the most part through segregation - they were causing a lot of problems (obviously) and killing a lot of inmates - although they had a lot of nonmember "punk" types that did a lot of the dirty work. The AB are some tough guys, for sure, but they're mostly just street brawlers - I don't think they've got the tactical know how or structured combative training that our SF guys do. I'd confidently say that if you put some con AB guy up against a DF or Seal, that the SF guy would be on top 90% of the time.
Showing respect isn't the same as being friendly in my case - I wasn't buddies w/ any of them (well, I did have one highschool friend of mine that was in for a while), but I didn't talk down to them for no reason. I did put people in the hole whenever they got mouthy or disrespectful though - but I also treated them right when they were respectful towards me. I'd let them watch TV for an extra hour after lights out, or give them a few extra minutes to shower - but I didn't run a loose ship or anything! Again, a jail is different from a prison though, in that about 80% of these guys and girls end up getting out after a short stay and you see them later when you're out at the grocery store w/ your wife and kids. They also generally behave well since bad behavior in jail can come up during sentencing at court.

The article I read about the AB said that because all they did was hand to hand with plenty of practice and motivation whereas the SF guys worked mostly with weapons with hand to hand being less important than being able to clear a room with out shooting yourself or your teammates. It was an article about knife fighting and it made the point that the AB kills more with knives than the SF. They were not talking about the Peckerwoods but the hardcore members who follow the odinist religion.
The town where I live Prince Albert our major employers are the prisons we have 30 000 people and 7 jails including the federal pen with a SHU. We also have a huge local correctional ,youth facility and female provincal and federal. The woman prisoners are absoulutly horrible. They have 7 times the incedents of the males. Our correctional has seperate sections for Dene(apache)and Chippewean indians. I am glad your prisoners on remand(thats what they call the prisoners who have not had a trial yet here)are mello. Here the federal prisoners are considered easier to handle as they are much better adjusted while the remand guys are going off and freaking out. The jail will have 10 incedents like spitting, stealing and hitting where the federal prisonerswill have one guy dead and the rest of the inmates calmly going about there business like they never even noticed something happened.

Oh, the Jails in small town Montana are definately fairly mellow. There is piss throwing and spitting and stuff like that, but I never had any problems with it my self. I didn't realize you were talking about knife fighting, I thought you were just talking about hand to hand / combatives - I could see that the SF guys don't do much in that arena. Aynways, I'll add Canadian jails to my list of places that I don't want to get locked up. 1. Mexican Jails, 2. Canadian Jails...
