I have never posted a video here before.....so let's see if this works.

The whole reason I made this video is that it seems on most knife forums that batoning is one of the most controversial subjects. Batoning is probably the source of more broken knives than any other use method.

Us owners of good knives love to do it, without fear or hesitation! But, you still see people saying stuff like:
- It is not necessary.
- You should never need to do it.
- Wrong tool for the job.
- They are not going to select a knife based on being able to baton.
- Etc, etc, etc.

I think people think of batoning as using a big knife to split wood. That is exactly what this video is about..... a different type of batoning.

Here, I am using a small knife (SR YK) and a baton to make something very common in bushcraft. A notch. This method is very quick, very effective, and has multiple uses. Making a cooking crane, tent peg, tarp guy line peg, pretty much anything you would need a notch for.

Okay: I tried embedding the video and it didn't work....so here is the link.

I really like how my dog IMMEDIATELY runs off with my baton the second I set it down

I have never before seen in my life, such a clear case of utter disrespect and abuse for ones knife. Does your momma know you hate knives?

I also love the dog stealing your work. Cute dog doing cute funny stuff.

I agree that any decent knife should be able to handle batoning.

I do "respect" my knives. But, I "expect" them to handle my intended chores.

Your batoning was nowhere near abusive in my book and child's play for a Busse knife of any size or type of steel made by Busse.

I have seen Busse knives have the you-know-what beat out of them.

I don't personally feel the need to have to beat it like I am trying to break it to consider it a good tool. But, it is nice to know they can take it.

Good thread and video.

Good stuff, Brian!

I need to work on some notching and deadfall trap building - I've read about it, but never tried it. I'm hoping to get my hands on a CG YK someday (come on, Dan!!)

As for batoning, I Baton my Dogfather through big stuff with total disrespect and lack of consideration for the knife's feelings, with a large baton, and I strike it hard and indescriminantly... I'd say it qualifies for gross abuse of the knife - but I'm positive it'll hold up!

This one had me rolling.....

I know what everyone means. These knives are tough, and sure can handle a lot of disrespect But, that was also kind of the point of the post. So many people claim that batoning is abusive, and shouldn't be done. Here is a clearly legitimate reason to do it, and it is nowhere near abusive.

I should have tried to show the notch better, but a notch made this way is very useful. The center actually has a point and if you carve down deep enough, there truly is a hook made out of wood.

Good stuff, Brian. I like using the little knives for light cutting and batoning, too.
