I have been holding off making a sheath for my Yard Keeper, because I wanted to do something special for it.

I am an amateur carver (at best), but I still wanted to do this. The size of the carving made it even more difficult. Had this been for a dog father, or something like that, it would have been much easier.

As you can tell, the sheath is not finished. But, this piece of leather will be the front of the sheath.

I am way, way impressed!
As the kids say, you have some mad carving skills!
I cannot wait to see the final product.

Were you able to get a pattern to transfer onto the leather Brian or did you freehand it. It looks good in any event. I've done some leather carving too and those little patterns can be challenging because the tools are too big.

I wonder if the image on a challenge coin could be used to make an impression on wet leather. I've never seen a challenge coin so I don't know if the image is raised.

I copied the logo at the top of the forum, and opened it in photoshop. I scaled it to the size I needed, then printed it. I traced it using tracing film, which I used to transfer on to the wet leather.

You are right though....that is the exact problem I was having. The tools were so big compared to the scale of the logo, I was having issues. I wasn't even able to do any backgrounding. But, oh well.....its a 5 footer....you know, looks good from 5 feet away!! <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/ooo.gif" alt="" />

I think it will look good up close too. It looks fine in the picture.

I once did a portfolio with beautiful pine cones and pine needles on the cover. It was my best work and I couldn't wait to finish it. Then I dyed it and screwed the pooch. Ended up using it for scrap leather.

I have a challenge coin and that was the first thing I checked. The pattern is not raised enough like on a real coin. It is more printed than carved.

Make sure to show us the finished product Brian. I love my YKLE now that I got it sharp.
