Here is a neat little Outdoor Skills quiz that I came across on the Outdoor Life website. Sometimes I question the advice of some of the "experts" because it is usually good advice for what a greenhorn should do. So, you always have to take stuff with a grain of salt. But, this one is not too bad. Outdoor Skills Quiz

Got one wrong. The question about what to do when you fall through the ice. <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/blush.gif" alt="" />

That is kind of a trick one I think. There are too many variables involved to answer it accurately. To me, curling up in a ball could also mean "curl up and sink to the bottom <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif" alt="" />"

Guess not.

Good test! <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/thumbup.gif" alt="" />
I did pretty good. I didn't like the trick question though. I picked the answer that seamed the closet to what I might do, even though I wasn't happy with any of the answers totally. I did good on the ice question because I remembered seeing that one in the Army Survival manual. <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/wink.gif" alt="" />

I missed one. I missed the one about the spending the night on the side of a cliff. I opted to head down into the valley thinking that the change in elevation would bring about warmer air. Had they provided more background info etc....

that ice question is stupid. pulling your knees to your chest is the technique you use underwater to float to the top if you're unable to swim up. you will, however, remain face down in the water. it's takes longer to die of hypothermia than it does to drown. i'd have chosen that answer if i had a snorkel.
i also got the bear question wrong, i guess since it's already decided to attack lookin big won't change its mind. "just sit there and get mauled." i'm sure that's saved countless lives. fighting back won't save you, but i'd say give scaring it one last ditch chance, then accept that you just have to wait till it's done with you and lay there helpless, since you are.
i got the trick question right, as i came up with my answers before looking at the choices. cept for the ice one, i really had no clue.
two wrong total, according to them.

I was taught in the Navy to pull your knees to your chest. In addition when I got certified to Ice Dive I was taught that as well. The premise if that it'll stop the flow of water around your core chest area. I never could figure out how to keep your hear afloat. I figured the best thing to do was avout frozen water.

For those that don’t know, the reason for bringing your knees to your chest to keep your core body warm is because otherwise, the shock of the cold water can lower the temp of your blood going to your heart and cause you to have a heart attack, which if it didn’t kill you, might cause you to drown.

I like that philosophy too. Stay away from frozen bodies of water! <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif" alt="" /> I've also read a couple of articles telling about how to rig a couple of Ice picks to aid you in the event of an accidental break through on the ice. I don't remember all the details though. <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/blush.gif" alt="" />
