I only carry about 20 pounds for a 3 day trip, but then again I am a mad man.

20 lbs. Still sounds like a lot to me. Unless it is winter. Winter gear adds quite a bit of weight.

ohhh I get it, when he said mad man, he meant that he is a really light hiker.
I thought he meant he was strong or something.

I have a terrible back, I have carried 180 lbs on my back before though it hurts your legs alot...
that pretty much all the info I have to offer.

what can I say, I'ma beast
actually when I did it I only weighed about 110.

mac. that sounds like a good setup, and really light, and the yardhook is just about the best knife for that kind of stuff.
Until the s7 gets here.

I took it to mean he was mad that he had to carry that much weight

All fun aside, the risk of injuring yourself goes up with the more weight you put on your back. The stress and stain on the body goes up and you become less agile and possibly unable to avoid some obstructions.

I use the Eagle AIII Large with optional side pouches if they are needed with pack weights around 60-70 pounds dry.

I have an Arcteryx Bora 80 that will carry 70+ pounds comfortably all day long. I love the way it lets your hips rock without shifting the load back and forth. You can't beat the suspension.

I should have mentioned that these are fall/winter weights for me and my 2 boys. I usually have to pack for my kids as well so that's where about 20+ pounds of that weight comes from. The kiddies cary 10 pounds or less each since they are only 5 and 8 years old. I usually make them carry food, water, a whistle and a jacket on hikes where camping is involved. I get to carry everything else.

If I am solo, my pack weight is in the 40-45 pound range for fall/winter camping dry. I still use the eagle for this usually. Summer trips allow me to get down to the 20-30 pound pack range which is where I like to be. I usually use a GoLite day pack or my UL45 pack from REI for summer trips. These lighter weight packs though really require you to mind the weight or they get uncomfortable real quick. The Eagle is the most comfortable, really durable pack I have found for $135.

Here is a pic of my REI UL pack (and my dads).

Hunter, listen to what SARhound was saying. Unless you are in PEAK PHYSICAL CONDITION you shouldn't try to carry over 25% of your body weight.

Or unless you're a freak of nature part-mule like myself. I'm a horrible runner but a crazy hiker; last year on a battalion conditioning hike I carried 30lbs of body armor, 50lb pack, 8lb M16A4, and a 63lb M2 .50 cal receiver for 8 miles out of 12. However my iron spine is the exception to the rule. "Not to be tried at home"

Oh and I'll vote for kifaru. Great stuff.
