Congrats on JYD status.
I do comp cutting with my katana and the trick is to pull a bit as you swipe at it. You want to pull it across the edge not hit it like a baseball. The DFLE could do it easily with the stock edge but even better with a zero edge.
The difference between "chopping" and "cutting" is in drawing the edge through the target. It's a very subtle movement and takes time to develop.
One exercise is to suspend a piece of paper by a paper clip inserted close to the edge. Then "cut" it without tearing it from the paperclip.
