So this last Summer I got the Mil-surp bug and I got a M-44 and to be frank I LOVE IT!!!! it is old and handy and handy and shoots a great powerful round.

The week before Last my dad calls me with news that he got a M-44 too.

We talked about our M-44s and possiable modifications, he took his bayonet off and is looking at other options. I read the Jeff Cooper definition of the a Scout Rifle, and like the idea, and I have handeled ther Styer Scout, it is very sleek, handy, way cool, but EXPENSIVE.

I have read this article, http://www.surplusrifle.com/shooting...ifle/index.asp and it has some great ideas for modifications.

So now I ask you my fellow Yard dogs, Show me your modified Mosins or scouts. Show me your scope mounts, and feel free to share any other thoughts or pointers you may have.

I don't know what it means to "bubba up" a rifle. I have a Mini-14 with an Eotek sight mounted in the scout position and plan to have the barell shortened to eliminate some of the whipping action. I hope this doesn't count and bubbafying my carbine. If it does, I'm sorry.

Given the context, I'd guess "Bubba" means adding on a bunch of accessories or otherwise modifying the weapon from it's original specs.

Everybody draws their own lines on what is tastefully done and what looks like a redneck prize winner.

Ha ha I just bought a mini 14 nthis weekend and already have plans to have the stock bedded barrel shortened, and a scout style scope , the whole accurising pacage done to it, I AM truely excited to get it done, I have to wait till the next gun show to see the MAN who dose all of the local swat team accurising and some of the military long range stuff, ( he is bad azz ) he will keep it for 3-4 weeks and make it sub- MOA!!!!!!!!!!!

Bubba normally means any permanent changes or modifications to the firearm. Best examples would be all the lee enfields out there with a cut down barrel, missing part of the stock, action drilled & tapped for a scope & all that good stuff. Really quite sad.

Usually it is only meant for rare or important Milsurp rifles. It was quite common in Canada in the 50's and 60's to take any old Enfield rifle and cut down the wood and barrel to make it a lighter handier deer rifle. Other rifles that were often "Bubbahd were Mausers and Springfields.

Personally I don't think there is anything wrong with making a average M4 Mosin into a scout but I would not do it to a Finn or other rare one.

I have a couple bubbas. One is the king of all bubbas the Parker Hale custom #4.
It is a beautiful high end hunting rifle built on a Enfield receiver. Custom PH barrel, beautiful bluing and a walnut montecarlo stock. It is like a .303 cal English dangerous game rifle for the price of a Stevens.

The other Bubba I just got the other day is a BSA SMLE No1 mark3*. It has only had a the wood cut so I may restore it or build it into a scout. This is a rifle that was made after WW1 and then brought back into service for use as a Home Guard rifle although it could have been used in combat in WW2 as SMLE's were much more popular than the new no4's just like M14's were more popular than M16's in veitnam.

It is a good shooter with a 5 groove barrel and the hard to find sights still intact. Unfortunatly it was a later model without the mag cut off(very desirable both to SMLE collectors and scout rifles) or volley sights.

The thing kicks like a mule compared to the cushy montrcarlo with thick rubber pad on my PH. I polished up the brass butt plate so it is blinging.

I also ordered a 1907 bayonet and a nea6t shorter indian Enfield bayonet.

Other than not having a scout scope my bubbad SMLE is very close to a scout rifle. It uses a good cartridge ,charger loaded ,10 round mag, light and handy,
set up for a ching sling, good iron sights, Jeff Cooper actually said that the least important part of a scout rifle is the scope. It is a bit long and heavy though. If the barrel had already been cut I could see bringing it down to 18 inches and putting it in a synthetic stock but I just could not hack up even a unremarkable SMLE myself.

Actually I don't own any rifles or shotties with ducks and dog engravings (yet).
I just think in Canada that if you have to explain why you shot some home invader you are better off with a Remington 700 that looks like the cops grandads duck gun than the ones the Swat team wanted but could not afford.

Hey StansBrew, can you please remind me of the guy's name? I was frantically searching for it (it must be the same guy) a few weeks ago. He was written-up in American Rifleman a few years back, if I recall. I'm contemplating having him do one of his specialty action-up builds of a Rem. 700 for me since he's local and is a rock star.
