Tool steels really aren't necessary for a folder. Its ability to pry will be determined by the strength of the pivot (which will almost always be weaker than the blade steel). Egde retention will be more important for more everyday cutting tasks.

Agreed SS, the ATS34 mainly came up in context of a shaker or alternative S4.. I figure a skinner/ small utility could use stainless's corrosion resistance (blood eats carbon steel) and didn't need sr77's awesome toughness.. Big knives, no-brainer, sr77 but little ones could use other steel grades IMHO. I'm not sure about a yard folder.. <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/confused.gif" alt="" />

The yard should stick to what they're doing which is fixed blades at great prices. There are a lot of great companies making folders, why compete against them.

i also agree with jerry. unless scrapyard can redefine the folder, id rather just see em dominate with fixed blades.

sorry to throw another iron in the fire here guys, but how does everyone feel about bg42?

I think that it beats the pants off of ats34. The yard IS all about performance at a reasonable price, and I haven't seen what bg42 goes for in bulk but i bet it is more than ats34.

However, a lot of dogs (and a lot of HOGS!) shelled out the bucks for a small fixed blade in INFI.

How would everybody feel about an active duty sized bg42 blade with respirene c grip/handles?

I dunno Blondie. BG42 is an expensive proprietary steel. If an SYK knife requires a high performance stainless why not use INFI?

An Active Duty size/style INFI knife with resiprene handle would be a-ok by me as I haven't managed to land a SS4 yet.

I suppose we have a question of economics for Dan

Is BG42 cheaper than INFI? I mean net cost, ie buying, production methodology, etc?

If so, is it a significant enough difference to merit using?

I really like bg42 (just got a cf bg42 milli, have had a bg sebbie), I think it's a great steel that takes an excellent edge relatively easily, and keeps it.
