I had three SS4's and sold one to a fellow Dog at my cost.
I will keep both of my remaining two for sure.
I know I would very likely regret just having one let alone none.
I am thinking about attempting a custom hidden tang micarta handle on one. But, I like the mudders so much. I don't have any strong desire to change it. Maybe if the mudders take damage some day (????).
The SS4 is most likely my favorite Scrap Yard knife. I say "most likely" only to keep the option open to change my opinion. But, I am pretty sure that won't happen. And after making satin and a little polishing, the SS4 is one of my favorite knives PERIOD!!!
I have a hard time imagining anyone owning one and being willing to part with it.
The DogFather is very good for a chopper, but I use smaller 4" blades most and it is very hard for me to find fault in my SS4. I love the size, shape, blade design, INFI, mudder handles, great finger choil size, and SATIN
I have owned hundreds of 4" or so sized knives and still own MANY. The SS4 is among the best IMO.
INFI is arguably the best knife steel on the planet. Very good for both large and small knives and more than sufficiently resistant to rust.
At the price Dan brought them to us, I consider it one of the best values in knives. You just can't get INFI at those prices and I consider the original release price on the SS4 very good and reasonable for INFI.
I wish Jerry would sell satin finished heat-treated INFI blanks so I could make my own scales and save what he charges for scales.
Even better if I could submit my drawings and be able to have the blank shape cut and some of the primary grinding done - then I could do the final tweaks and handles and hopefully save money. - I would likely buy a bunch of blanks...
However, Res-C is a very reasonable price option and VERY nice handle material IMO.
I wish Dan could get more INFI and bring us more INFI at reasonable prices.
