I wanted to see if anybody could compare an ASH-1 to a chopweiler, S6, yard hook, or anything else really. I'm trying to decide if I should just get one or save for new swamp/yard releases or splurge on some new leather. If I went with the ASH-1 I'd probably go with OD/OD mag G-10.

My will to resist the Mini Uncle Mojo is weakening as well.

I'd love to see some side-by-side photos or hear any general opinions. A chop-off could definitely seal the deal either way!

I got a ASH-1 SE at Blade 2007. It has a thinner blade and is lighter than the CG, so these results will not apply. I am quite sure that the Ratweiler can easily out chop any of the ASH-1s, though. Here is the comparison I did with the Scrapper 6 and M6 back in November, 2007.

Horned, dangerous, and off my medication.

Thanks HornDog. cool writeup. I decided to pass and snatched up an SS4, skelly warden, and yard guard on BF. 2 scrappers, 2 INFI instead of 1 INFI busse. I'm pretty excited about it.

As I've posted before, I just couldn't get excited about the ASH. It's a 'tweener; not small enough for an EDC, but not big enough to be chosen over a BM or DF if I'm going heavy.

For whatever it's worth, I think that you got about as good as the ASH in your Yard Guard. The SS4 is a "must have", best of breed blade, and lots of folks love their Skelly Wardens. If you paid about the same for the YG + SS4 as you would've for an ASH, I'd say you made a good choice -- if you got all three for anywhere near the same price, then you did very well indeed.

i like horn dog's a ton. i want the thin stock, i have many thick spined knives.

i probably should have picked up the chopweiler, but i figured i'd make due with my ranger assault knife until the scrapper 7.

I definitely like the CW handle better than the Fusion handles on my magnum FBM and standard BATAC. I think the CW is my favorite knife less than 14". I am quite fond of my yard hook, but I like the CW a little better. I've seen several in the secondary market at the same as store price, even $200 shipped a few times. I think the long presence in the store helped hold down the secondary market value. I have pretty big hands and the CW fits them perfectly. I'm going to try cordwrapping the BATAC and I think that will make it fit me a lot better. It's thin like the ASH-1 SE.

they are still changing hands regularly in the $200-$230 shipped range. Mine was about $220 shipped from the store I think. Mine is OD. I like to pet her every day hehe.. I don't feed her enough though. She's taken a few big bites out of my junky chinese pressboard computer desk when I wouldn't take her out.

I think that the ASH1 (w/ micarta mags) is my favorite knife - I've got a CGFBM, DF, DFLE, Hook, RD7, RD9, BATAC, RAT5/7, and a few others in that "general" range. I haven't gotten out to the woods w/ my ASH1 yet, but I can tell that it'll be a heck of a chopper for its size. It has got my favorite handle, by far (although I'm sure it won't be as comfortable as ResC for chopping). I love my Hook, but don't think that the two knives are all that similar other than relative size. I don't think that the ASH1 will outchop my DF or FBM, but its also a good 3" shorter. I know that it'll outchop anything else that I have in that 5-7" range, though.

As Jim mentioned, its WAY too big for EDC, but I think that its a great "do all" knife, if you weren't going to take both a dedicated chopper and a midsized knife with you.

This thread needs a pic or two. So here's my ASH-1, I really love it.

I'm with Dice, although I don't have much dirt time with it yet, I really like the size and feel. I'm really glad I got one.
