Anybody have any idea how many blades you'd need to make a custom design near regular production release prices?

I know it is hard to get more than 3 people to agree on anything, but I think it would be really cool if we could spec out a release blade that several people want and see if Dan would run a large batch of them. Is that something that has already happened? I think the scrapweiler would be a perfect example. I would even be ok with committing in advance like over at Busse Combat. Then we might even be able to get some desert tan or OD blades.

I guess this would work somewhat like a military order, but I have no idea what kind of volume they get on a single run.

Sound feasible?

This is ScrapYard dammit! Dumpster diving; Dan going to the big house and getting us great deals on great steel, "Performance to Price Ratio!" Giving us the best blade for the best price. A custom knife, whatever design and quantity would not be conducive to that motto. Even different colors change the cost. The boss makes us what the boss makes us and we are very happy with that.

I am happy with blades period as well, but I think there is unseen potential here. They already use a batch production model so if a certain as yet unspecified minimum quantity was met, it would almost be business as usual. People committed to the minimum quanity would already have their blades secured, and everybody else could F5 over them at the store when they release the overrun. The main part of my question was concerning the quantity required to maintain the price to peformance ratio. Its obviously not an urgent issue as there isn't a particular design associated with the discussion. Its simply something to think about when we talk about what we'd like to see next.

I think being able to agree upon and contract a particular design would be great, but like WD said, it kinda goes against the SYKCO mission for the most part. So it's not very likely IMHO.

Sounds like a job for the Busse Custom shop, but there goes the minimal price. <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/blush.gif" alt="" />
