T/D - the double cut should be much the same as bead-blasted, therefore not reflective like a polished blade. <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif" alt="" />
Right you are, Tom. I read a post on BF once that I can't seem to find right now. IIRC, the post said that a double-cut blade is first sand-blasted and then bead-blasted. If there's a concern with double-cut blades, it's that blasting the blade introduces microscopic "pores" into the blade surface that could promote corrosion. Keeping the blade clean, dry and protected should be sufficient to prevent it from corroding, however.

Anybody else able to add any insight to this? If these knives are going to have less corrosion resistance than Scrap Yard Knives normally have I just lost interest in getting one. I always clean my tools before putting them up but that may still mean they stay "dirty, wet and unprotected" for three or four days.

The doublecut finish should not be hard to maintain. Get a Tuf Cloth. Marine grade if you're really worried. If it works for under sea operations for US Navy Seals, it will be even better for ordinary uses. My stripped Scrappers and LEs are doing just fine here on my little island on a salt marsh. It's a good non-reflective finish and is much smoother than a stripped blade. I just wouldn't worry about that, jackell.

Horned, dangerous, and off my medication.

Thanks Vic, I've been using the tuf-cloths for a few months now thanks to your prior recommendations in previous posts.

Bruce, in a perfect world tools would be cleaned right after use. When I get home from a camping trip the first thing I do is unpack everything, inspect it then clean and lube what needs cleaning and lubing, however, if I spend a day hiking into a secret trout spot, spend a day fishing and another day hiking out I go in with as little gear as possible. If it starts to drizzle halfway through the first day and continues off and on the next two my equipment isn't going to get a proper cleaning until I get back. I love my Scrap Yard Knives and believe they are the best knife made period. At the same time I want a knife that will handle the above situation and clean up from it when I get back. That means nothing more than a little surface rust that will easily come off when I get home.

I bet Dan has some stainless steel somewhere. If you really want low maintenance, a good stainless is the way to go. A satin or DC Mutt in 440C would be fine with me, but for now, we have tuf cloth.

Justin of Ranger Knives says the same as bld522 and that is why he prefers to sell either coated or mirror finished blades to limit the corrosion issue !!!

basically, you're going to be using it for three or four days straight.
I actually wouldn't worry about it, even if you just wipe it off on your pant leg or something clean and dry after use and then use it the next few days without colmplete cleaning or lubing I'm sure it will be fine.
doublecut finishes are pretty resistant to rust aren't they?
thats what I thought, at least.

hmmmm, I thought it would be a while for the next release. Guess I now have plans for Sunday. I don't think I can pass this one up...
