Here's my pathetic attempt to demonstrate solar capability. It's a very crude and 1st attempt on video usage for me and I shot it in the back yard before going to work so go easy on me if you will. This is one of those fast forward videos that if I get some time, vastly needs edited. Anyhow an experiment none the less.

The basic idea is solar cells can provide some of the basics and more
1. Communication
2. Shelter
3. Fire
4. Water Purification
5. Navigation
6. Medical-mabey a controversial stun gun for snake bites?
7. Food- I know you can't eat it for food but mabey power a laser pointer to coral fish in a trap (I use to use the laser pointer to run the fish around the pond at night for kicks)

I was able to watch all of the videos and learned a fair amount I knew solar cells were more avaible, are they very affordable now? but just the options of power in the wild/bush is a neat concept.
thanks.

Cool Solar Cell, and cool waterproof bag too!! <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/cool.gif" alt="" /> <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/thumbup.gif" alt="" />

What does a solar sell like that cost?

For that matter how much does one of those bags cost? I need one of those for my canoe trips. <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/blush.gif" alt="" />

Well, I’m back home on slow dialup (spring break) but I’ll check them out when I get back to school. Just a tip, I saw you posted them on your photobucket account, you might want to host videos on YouTube instead. On photobucket, it goes against your total file size storage limit, and videos take up a lot of space. Also, on YouTube it suggests related videos, so it drives more traffic to your videos so more people see them. Also people can leave comments on your videos. It’s also fun to watch your hit counter climb as people watch your videos. Mine has over 10,000 views total.

Thanks james_bond, cells continue to come down, the one I have now is a 40 watt with a watershed dry bag. You need a 20 watt or greater to be effective. 40 Watt seams to run a lot.

Thanks Jeff, the bag costs from $81-$169 and worth every penny from here.

These bags are definitely hard core, you can dive with them down to at least 200 feet, I keep my sleeping bag in one and solar equipment in another but any configuration will work. The cell I got was $310 from a guy vitabon off of e-bay and they usually start at $300, he always has them. It's a 40 watt cell. If you get a bag add the purge valve, it makes it real easy to adjust buoyancy.

Good advice Andy, I'm new at the video and also need to get the editing down. What software do you edit yours with?

I use Windows Movie Maker that came with my MS Vista on my laptop. I don’t think its too difficult to use. I just played around with it and figured it out without reading any help files or anything.

I film the video with the same camera(s) that I use to take the pics I post. I only have two 512 MB that are my biggest memory cards, so when I film video it’s only about 3 mins until I have to switch memory cards. I really need to get a couple gig cards since the price has really come down.

Very cool. I have never seen the water purification units in use. 40 watts is enough to power some of the desalinization units as well. Fresh water anywhere.

Thanks for the advice Andy, I'll try to mess around with some of the editing when I get a chance.

Jeff, I have one of there back packs and a few of there duffels. Once I got one I just couldn't stop. I have a lot of my gear in these bags and love it. Great product, the backpack opening was a little small for me but I use the back pack for cloths and etc.. the duffels you can put all sorts of stuff in those because the mouth on the bags are huge.

lighthiker, thanks for the complement. Solar is gaining ground with all the oil rip offs going on. It has a lot of potential.

I got me a neeto solar powered lantern at Walmart today. It has LED's, so should be fairly efficient. It is outside charging right now....
