if the SR77 blade gets rust on it, is the toughness of the actual blade and its solidness (if thats a word) weakened???

rust ON it? I doubt it. pitting and DEEP rust (idk how long that'd take, but probably VERY LONG) ...maybe, but I doubt it would be bad enough to do that.

No, unless it has been soaking in saltwater for a few years.
Always good to keep your blade free of rust though.
To give you a prespective of how DC rusts my MOD7 has sat on my desk oiled in the cardboard sheath since I got it. I took it out today and there were tiny specks of rust on it that I could srape of with my fingernail. Not bad but it is cosmetic.

A little oil and rag will take it off. As I said SR-77 is non-stainless, but it's not a rust magnet. On the edge, strop it out. The steel characteristics (toughness, etc) are within the matrices of the entire blade and not just the surface. Rusting won't do jack to the carbide matrices in the steel. Overheating the blade and cooling it will, basically f***ing with the heat treat and carbide matrices. Excuse the slight abuse of language, but I can't put it any other way.

as long as the knife itself isnt weakened by a little rust, im cool. i dont want to sacrafice the tank-like structure of the DMDC with some damned rust

Ahhh... you'll be fine. If you're really worried get some marine tuf-cloth or ren-wax. Also, I've found that motor oil works pretty well, too.
Once I forgot to take my RMD out of it's wet sheath for a week. There were some water drop-lets on the edge and the entire sheath was definitely not dried. After I took the knife out, there was just a couple of spots on the edge. A few strokes on the strop and it was all gone.
SR-77, as I've heard from the yard, is less prone to rust than even SR-101.
The only way to weaken the blade is by messing with the heat treat. I don't think anyone will be heating a blade to 3500 degrees and just let it sit there. Right?
Destroying a blade also doesn't actually weaken the blade... you're just destroying it.
