My knife arrived in pristine condition... but i quickly put an end to that. I bought this knife to be a user, so a friend and i took a little hike and i tried some batoning with the DMDC. When i got home I knew a needed to clean it up... all a had at the time was some break free clp but it removed all of the grime from by blade. After scrubbing the blade down for a while i was left with a very clean, slightly scuffed up, well oiled blade. A few days later i picked it up and noticed some dark gray lines forming near the edge of the blade. I'm really not concerned as long as it's not going to affect my blade in any way other than cosmetically. But i did think it was a little odd that we are the only ones reporting this issue.
I don't know if there's anything to this, but my knife was also inspected by #18

Ok.. i'll admit that i know very little about steels and the different types of corrosion that can occur to them. Is an induced patina (mustard, vinegar, etc...) just oxidation of the steel? If so, is the grey etching on my blade right now the same as what i would get after applying a patina? thanks

What do you do for a living, darkaether? The reason I ask is, unless you're a full-time knifesmith with over 15 years of experience, I'm going to trust what my knifesmith told me. Keep in mind that I had already made arrangements with him to have my DMDC refinished and resharpened BEFORE he pointed out the corrosion. He had absolutely nothing to gain by doing that. He also had one crucial advantage over you in forming his professional opinion. He saw my knife and you didn't.
In discussing the corrosion issue with me, my knifesmith repeated something that has been stated in this and other forums. Bead blasting introduces microscopic pits in the surface of the blade that act to trap moisture. That's normally not a problem with knives constructed of stainless steel. But it can be a problem with non-stainless knives. And if my knifesmith is to be believed, it WAS a problem with mine. I have a BS in chemistry, [censored] laude, from Va Tech, and a few years of research in synthetic organic and organometallic chemistry. Now I work in management in LTL trucking so I see a lot more rust than most people, and how little it affects performance. I wasn't replying to you. I was replying to reconseed's 5 or 6 posts "I'm so worried" "Now I'm worried" Maybe "superficial" would have been a better word choice than "cosmetic" But I will say if he "fixed it" for $20, it isn't something I'd worry about, and I doubt he was worried about it either. I'm not saying anything against your knifemaker either. Cosmetic issues are extremely important to knife makers. And just to clarify when I say "superficial" I mean "on the surface" Not derogatory either, which sounds like that's the same thing he said. It was a cosmetic problem, very easy to fix, not affecting performance, hence "nothing to worry about" Unless you want recon to worry some more You are correct about the staining being "superficial" and it not affecting performance. However, we have an unconditional warranty to cover the knife. Make sure you regularly oil uncoated blades to avoid staining or rust Dan

I saw a scrapper 6 pounded through a thick metal pipe with a 3 pound hammer, with thick CHIPS (not just dents) and tears in the edge (and people talk about microfractures! pshh!) so... I really do doubt some corrosion would effect the blade rconseed. you might get some corrosion on your blade after use in maybe a wet climate or something. and it can be a "problem" but really it's not going to effect performance, (unless it's on the edge maybe... which if it is you can just sharpen it off) although I'm sure anyone would want to take care of it if they knew about it.
so calm down reconseed!!
lol hope you can get some good pics when your DMDC gets here man.

I'm a newbie to scrapyard knives, but so far i couldn't be happier with my purchase! These days it is both rare and admirable to find someone standing behind their product like you do. Keep up the great work... thanks
