I'd like to make a leather sheath for my dumpster mutt. Who sells good kits or the raw materials I'm after?

He is the only guy i entrust to make my pants to cover my precious Yard and Busse blades. end of story. if you think you can rival him, i will wish you success and if you get something worked up, i wanna see it.

Right on Vance! The sheaths that I make for my knives are VERY "plain Jane", but I made them! Besides, the money I saved by making my own helps me afford Dan's next knife release! However, my lack of sheath funds has nothing to do with Jeff's work - he is indeed a Master!! And don't overlook some of our other sheath-makers who do beautiful work as well! Tom

I bought one from Eric at the Swamp and that sheath is nothing compared to Rainwalker's art. But anyways... How do you make your own leather sheath? i would like to try sometime.

It’s fun and satisfying to make your own sheath. The easiest type to make is a pouch sheath, like the one I made for my GW. Being my first leather sheath, I think it turned out pretty well. I’ve been carrying it daily since I made it, and it’s been holding up just fine.

I first used some paper to make the pattern, leaving room for the belt loop that I sized to perfectly fit my belt, and enough room for it to fold over and leave room for the welt. Then when I was sure the paper was exactly the right size, I traced it onto the leather and cut it out. If you want to do it cheap as possible like I did without any extra tools, at the minimum you need some leather, waxed thread, heavy needles, and a drill or hammer and nail. Also some minor other things that most people already have like glue, pliers, etc. It’s not too hard, it just takes time.

When I get some free time, I’d like to try making some leather pocket sheaths for my SW. I also want to make a HEAVY duty sling (David and Goliath type sling, not gun sling) using leather and 550 cord.

I gave the leather making stuff a try and found that Tandy Leather is a great place to start. Making sheaths is a good time. Tandy has a couple of books that talk about basic leather work that are pretty good. I got good info from The Art Of Hand Sewing Leather Book. They will let you read them in the store as well if you only find a few parts helpful. Learning the saddle stich is key. Water based dye's don't work well for me. Let any dye's dry completely before working with the leather. Use sharp tools to cut the leather.

I probably have about $50 in tools invested (not including drill press which I already had). A nice size spool of thread costs about $25 and a leather shoulder (7oz-9oz) I get on sale at Tandy for about $30-$40 depending on the size etc. I use a drill press to make the holes for stitching. I also use this on kydex so it's a great investment.

I waited quite a long time to try out leather and I wish I had done it sooner. It's way more fun than kydex and it just looks better on certain knives.

Give it a try. Jeff answered a few questions I had as well when I started. He is a great guy as you know.

Ron
