So I did promise you guys a small review once I got the grunt.

Note, this is a very, very short test. I only did the very simple tasks. Once Cloak gets his DMDC, we might do a more extensive test including the RMD, Grunt, CSK, Nimravus, and other medium/small blades that we have. We will also do much more than just the usual.

The test I did yesterday night was just between the RMD and Grunt. It was wet and I was really satisfied when I finished the test. Both knives were stropped and were very sharp.

At the time, it was fairly dark.

Just before the test I was able to catch the flock of geese in the picture above. They flew right over me.

On with the simple test.

Here are the two knives side by side on the test log.

First was the 25 chop test.

Then I did a little fuzzing up.

RMD fuzziness.

Grunt fuzziness.

When I finished it was still quite dark.

That was about it for the test. As I said it was quick and simple test. I also did the test with leather gloves.

Conclusion:

On the 25 chop test, the grunt was better. It is a larger knife and can generate more force. The convex ground was amazing at this area. It bit really deep and was fairly quick at chopping. If the Grunt can out chop the RMD, it will definitely out chop the DMDC. The handle on the grunt was comfortable as long as my hand did not slip to end. The RMDs handle was also very comfortable, however, I would frequently slip as I was wearing gloves.

On making the fuzzy sticks, the convex grind failed me. The RMD, possibly because it was been stropped so much, was much easier in slicing wood. The convex ground would bite, proceed along the log for a fair amount and just pop out the slice of wood. It was annoying.

I really like both knives. I have finally found the perfect replacement for my CSK. The Grunt is larger and probably better than my CSK. I also really do like the convex ground on the knife. It is very well done. Cloak was also nice enough to give me some 600 grit wet&dry sand paper for me to sharpen on.

My only complaint is the handle on the Grunt. The sudden drop in the last bit of the handle is really annoying when I chopped with it. My pinky finger would get constantly jammed. The Res-C handles of has remedied that problem with a more shallow slope and a stickier grip. The Kraton handles are well molded and are still comfortable.

If I have time today or tomorrow I might do a little more testing on these two knives. Specifically whittling points and batoning.

I'll also do a more formal and elongated conclusion once I do a little more extensive testing.

(little side note - Cloak and I WILL do more testing on the smaller knives that we have. He's hoping to be getting his DMDC soon so we can test it )

nice!
great test already, and I'm looking forward to the more extensive test.
I'm wanting one more and more... I still don't have the money though!

I'm just curious though, why do you think the DMDC won't chop as good as the RMD?

Great pics too.

I meant the DMDC won't chop as good as the Grunt.

We'll see what happens with the DMDC when Cloak gets his. I think the too might be on par with the RMD slightly better due to size and angle of grind/ thickness of knife.

Heheh Sharp just enjoys thinking his thinking his knives are better than mine

I didn't buy the DMDC as a chopper, you silly kid! I bought it so I'll have a small knife to tote about for buchcraft. I already have an RTAK, RD7, and Hatchet for chopping

But I will concede the point, you're grunt will most likely outchop the DMDC

Oh and cool test by the way. Once the DMDC arrives, LET THE TESTING BEGIN!

Have you hugged your camp knife today?

Nice review, Ninja.
I use my DMCG a bunch, but I have not attempted to chop with it, yet. Now, in my wife's hands, it's like a 9" bowie knife....

Not really Cloak, we both have good knives.

As far as BC, our RMDs are the master of that stuff. Perfect thickness, length, edge, grind, etc., etc. Not too mention just how sharp they are.

But I really can't wait for your DMDC. It's gonna be a long test with lots and lots of pictures and a two part test.

That extensive test will be LOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOONG!!!!!!!!!!!!!

YOU GUYS HAVE THE SAME KNIVES!

I don't think the dmdc will be better than the RMD for bushcraft, but it will be very good once you get a nice edge on it! (but the RMD is just alot thinner and more for slicing than the dmdc)
AND it will be FUN to destroy stuff with it!!!

If you want a short chopper, try the CGDM. It will amaze you.

I would have a DMCG however no one will offer it to me for the orig price of 70 bucks.

In fact, the price is doubled. For that much... well... you get the idea.

Cloak and I were hoping Blade West '07 had some but they didn't. Both of us really did, and still do, want a DMCG.

I mean, if anyone had some spare DMCGs I might have one but sadly (for me) everyone loves the DMCG so much that even if they did, they'd horde it.

Oh well, I'd do the same if I had 30 DMCGs, so I can understand. I'll just wait for Dan to come up with something new and exciting similar to the DMCG.
