Hi all

I came across this in my search for an effective/foolproof way of sharpening a convex edge:

"If you have a Lansky, Gatco or DMT sharpening system, you can slightly bend one of the guide rods and grind convex edges with it. This means that you also get exactly the same convex curve every time you sharpen your knife. That is nice.

A straight guide rod guides the sharpener to go straight. A bended guide rod guides the sharpener to make a curve across the edge = convex grinding movement. (The bended guide rod lifts up the back end of the sharpener more and more when you move the sharpener forwards, across the edge).
The curved guide rod make exactly the same curve every stroke you do, that means that you very easy can maintain the convex edge - and you always get exactly the right curve you want to have.

The height of where the guide rod slides thru in the back end decides the convex curve (flat or steep). You can also bend the guide rod more, or less, so it fits the curves on your knife.

If you like to se pictures of how it looks like, go to www.edgepal.com. The Swedish side has pictures of bended guide rods in use together with our sharpening tools.

I have a Lansky and if I use a jig to bend the rod evenly, do you guys think this will work? I plan on trying the leather/mouse pad method on a cheap knife, but if this works more consistantly, why not?

Any thoughts?

Also, does anyone here know if the Busse ASH-1 has a convex edge?

Thanks,
Gideon

sounds like it would work, although I don't mind the sandpaper/mousepad. technique (and I'm not even that great at it... although I'm getting better.)
I like being able to throw a 4" piece of wet and dry in my pocket and knowing I can get my knives sharp if I have to. (anywhere)
but I would like I said it seems like a great way to do it. (or to just set the edge how you want it, or get it nice and sharp before a camping trip or something.

good luck!

I'm not sure about Busse, I think scrapyards have convex grind, but they aren't that... noticeable... I guess you could say. (???)

are you getting one?!

Never tried a sharpening system, is it good? Can you use it on big knives?

Only use Fallkniven DC4 and it works just fine for me. Always bring it with me

I use the sandpaper and mousepad and strop in the field and I have never had a problem

sharpening systems are fine, but I prefer my 1x30 belt sander for convexing an edge at home...

What grit size do you have on the sandpaper?

I think a Lansky with 'custom' bent rods would be a good way of setting a sharp initial edge in the absence of a belt grinder.. While it's been about a year since my last Busse kin purchase, up to then the edges came concrete chopping ready and sliced like bananas.. Thinning them out helps no end.

The sharpest edge I ever got was using the mouse-mat but it was always hit or (mostly) miss for me. It seems the secret is keeping the spine low and just using the knife's weight not pushing down at all. Perhaps thick leather would be better- but I've not tried it.. (Less liable to round off the edge as the blade can't sink in so much) My DF is sporting a Lansky V edge right now and it seems fine. My much abused Tramontina machete also has a V edge and that is fine too having had the brown stuff knocked out of it!

In the field I just take medium and fine ceramic sticks.. Maybe not razor but good enough for little effort!

The mouse pad strategy works really well. I used it to polish the edge when I had my grunt.

Simon,

Usual grits of 200, 400, 600, 1000, 2000 are what people have. You can go even higher with other material that use various mesh fibers. 'Course this is for the extreme polish that many people can achieve with 1000-1200 grit.

I don't use something like 200 grit unless I have to take big dents out of stuff.

Thanks for sharing.

You may want to also try a leather strop, it works well and I find it forgiving

Thanks Dan, I will try the leather strop, I think it will polish the edge nicely.
