A couple of years ago I standarized on mag-lite mini-mag lites 2AA for most of my uses & upgraded them with the LED inserts from WallyWorld. Worked pretty well since the LED's have a longer life & I only had to keep spare AA's on hand. Camping on Edisto Island (s. of Charleston) over the weekend & used one several times til I noticed that it was putting off a LOT of heat. It was off at the time & in my pocket, but I could feel it getting hotter & hotter. Disected it the next a.m. & found the wires leading to the LED insert fused & the entire insert damaged from heat. Anyone else had a prob like that or can anyone help solve the mystery of why it went into china syndrome mode?

Hmmm…maybe it shorted out? I’d try contacting the manufacturer of the LED upgrade. FYI, I HIGHLY recommend the AA 3 watt LED Maglites. I have both, and the 3 watt is MUCH brighter than the dimmer “upgrade kits”. They’re a great buy for the price. I tested mine and it ran for over 4 hours on a set of batteries, so it doesn’t drain the power very fast. I use rechargables for mine, and I even have a solar battery charger so I can charge them in the wilderness if I wanted. <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/laugh.gif" alt="" />

Thanks for the Info, Andy.
I've wondered about the new LED Maglites. I've always had pretty good luck with Maglites but they don't list their stuff in Lumens so I've hesitated to get one of the new ones. I've gotten used to Lumens as a light measurement and I'm always hesitate if the company doesn't list it that way.

No, the one I tried was the Nite-Ize one from Walmart.

I hear the Nite-Ize LED upgrades were pretty good. I thought about getting one for my 2C cell mag lite.

looks like maybe the two wires in the LED insert had gotten twisted together & were shorting the whole thing out. replaced it with a dorcey, but i like the twist on/off feature of mag-lites better cuz it prevents the light from getting accidentally bumped into the one position while in a pack & killing the batteries. oh well, the search goes on.
