When the DMDC first came out there was a lot of threads concerning if this knife would have a rusting problem. The best way to find out is to test it. I just returned from a 4 day Trout fishing trip.

I left the knife in the live well during the day except to take it out and use it.

On the first day the DMDC was used for the normal activitites in a boat related to fishing. Was it the best tool for the job? No. The Leatherman Mirca was the best tool for the job, but the DMDC did everything ask of it.

The DMDC was used to clean the first days catch. Was it the best tool for the job? Again no. The small Rapala fillet knife was, but the DMDC handled the job amirably.

Even as slimely as your hands and knife get cleaning fish the Res-C handle was easy to hang on to.

At the end of the day the DMDC was dried and wiped down with a Tuf-Cloth. After 4 days in the water the DMDC did start to show some signs of rust.

Keep in mind these are extreme close up pictures. The rust spots are so small they look like a minor blemish to the naked eye.

This was only minor surface rust and easily came off by hand with a Scotchbrite pad.

As a retired national sports caster was fond of saying "You make the call!"

Will the DMDC rust faster than a CG or Satin blade? Looks like it. Is this a problem? I'm sure it will be for some.

I don't have a a belt sander or bench grinder so I don't consider rust a problem if I can get it off by hand. I personally believe the DMDC was a good purchase......Thanks, Dan

wow!
awesome test!
impressive too.
4 days in water (except for when being used) and dried and wiped down at the end of the day.
sounds like a perfect test!

You test knives the way they ought to be - by DOING it!

Great review, and WELL worth reading! Thanks for the pics too, looks like you had some fun ;-)

For what its worth, I've found regular old Break-Free CLP to do extremely well as an anti-rust agent. I wipe it on the blade, then wipe it off on a cloth. Haven't had a blade rust yet. And no, it doesn't make food taste funny - at least not that I've noticed.

Nice Pics Jackel!

Looks like you had a great fishing trip, all those fish are making me hungry!

I would think that some stainless knives might even get light rust spots from those conditions. Doesn't seem like a major concern to me if the knife is cared for properly. A good wipe down and some protectant applied afterwards will usually do the trick.

Looks like it faired well. The spots on the blade are pretty minor considering what it just been subjected to.

JYD#14 Do you need one, of course you do it's a knife and you like knives.....

Nice info, I just purchased a DMDC and was wondering about this exact issue. And I don't even have the blade in hand yet.

I would have probly used some 00 steel wool like I do on my Satin coated pistols to remove powder residue, but like bld said, if its a user, not a major problem.

Well done review. Enjoyable read.

If I took a brand new DMDC and did nothing but wipe it down and occasionally oil it, it would still probably last a hundred years. So what if it gets a patina? Good test.

Horned, dangerous, and off my medication.

My main concern with rust is when it gets where you can't see it.. With res-C over the tang giving it such good corrosion protection, I don't think any of us will ever see rust really hurt a Dawg!
