I took out the HC today between thunderstorms. A little slicing, notching, batonning and such. It's about the same size as the average tactical folder. Here it is with the Al Mar SERE 2000.

I put a nice fine edge on it and it would slice curls of wood pretty well.

The handle feels great in the hand. The thumb ramp and choil are usable, even for my big hands.

I did some splitting of kindling, which the HC did fine on. I wouldn't recommend using a folder like the SERE for this, although some folks do.

Then came the point test. I have done this with the SS4, Meaner Street, and even a Mora without damaging the point. I drive the point into the wood and then try to chunk out a piece.

Darn. I like the little HC, but 154CM isn't INFI!

Thanks HD, Great review as always! Sorry about the damage to the knife. There are times when I need to dig a bullet out of a piece of wood. IMHO this wasn't an excess test and the knife should have handled this chore.

Thanks for the review HD.

Ouch! I'm disappointed, I have a MPLE on the way. I wonder if it was that batch of steel or if all of them are like that.

I deserved it. I put too much lateral force on the tip. Not a great idea on a small knife. I blame Bowflex. I have done similar stupid stuff to Busses before and got away with it. I think 154CM is a very fine steel, but it isn't as tough as INFI, SR77, or SR101.

I really didn't think it would break. The knife did well in everything else and it is a fine knife. Just don't do what I did! It isn't a prybar. It's a knife.

It is. Especially on my low retirement income! I would have to call that point test "abuse", but it is something one might actually do in a suvival situation....if he was stupid. I haven't messed up a knife that bad since I bent the Condor Inca Knife blade like a pretzel. The knife still works, but it has a wave or two in it.

Yeah...especially if he was able to do it with a Mora, and Eric had said:

I'm supposed to be getting some testing pics sometime soon. I'll post them as soon as I get them, however, in a nutshell the 154cm with our heat treat was extremely durable. It took a heavy beating, the edge held up great and didn't chip out even after a real smack down.

I can't say the Mora or any of them would have necessarily survived the same test on this piece of wood. This wood is just too tough.
