Today, Cloak just got back from his week trip and we decided to do our usual hike.

A little bit further down the trail and we go off to our campsite.

So now the fun begins. The first thing that we needed to do was harvest and baton through some fresh wood for our fire.

We had a nice cedar log that I chopped down to a more batonable size.

I then took the smaller pieces and batoned it with the YKLE

Next I dug a fire pit with my FBM. I did well and was quick work. There was some decent sized rocks but the knife suffered no damage. <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/laugh.gif" alt="" />

Here's our first fire.

It was just a crude throw-wood-in-make-pile type of fire. We started with a densely packed cube of fatwood shavings and fat wood sticks.

We did a pretty darn good job, though.

But we felt that the fire was a little too big for the pit that I dug. So Cloak cleared out the area and he dug a giant fire pit for our next fire. I'm on the side prepping fatwood sticks and our cube.

Here's a shot with a better idea of our little campsite. Half of it has a lot of plant growth, half of it is clear dirt ground.

On with the second fire. This time we decided to start a tee pee style fire. We first start with a some a cedar fuzzy stick, courtesy of the HDed YKLE, and some fatwood sticks, courtesy of the the Meadowlark.

Because of how a tee pee fire works we needed something to hold the fatwood cube that we would place under the base of the fire.

We had some more fuzzied up pieces of wood that we placed above our mini tee pee.

So after setting up the tee pee, we set fire the cube and placed it under the base. Voila!

Unfortunately the tee pee fire turned it the usual throw-wood-in-make-pile type of fire.

So for our third fire, we decided to start one using the log house cabin style fire. We started with the usual fatwood cube and sticks. It got started a little slowly but became very hot very quickly.

So after quite some time the third fire died out and decided to hike back, it was pretty late in the evening.

The hike out is always hell. It's quite a deep descent down to our camp site. Here are some shots up the hill that we have to hike.

A little bit longer and we finally hiked out. At the end of the day, we were covered in bug bites, mosquito bites, and any other bite you can think of while out in the summer.

Though, I think we had a pretty eventful day: 3 fires. <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/laugh.gif" alt="" />

Well, we did learn something as well from the three fires. So the easiest fire to make is the throw-wood-in-make-pile type of fire. However, it was easier for the tee pee type fire to catch and burn. However, that tee pee became less tidy. The log cabin type fire took a little longer to catch but was the easiest to keep tidy and going.

Thus, the best fire would be a tee pee style fire inside a log cabin. <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/laugh.gif" alt="" />

thanks for posting those up, Sharp. I haven't unpacked my knives yet, but I imagine there'll be a lot of cleanup to do. Still a fun day. I managed to escape without any noticeable bites. I wonder if your scented laundry detergent attracts them? we use unscented, so idk. and that was the only real difference I could see between us. Yea, I was covered in bug bites. My left arm especially had quite a few little red dots everywhere with a couple of moutains. <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/laugh.gif" alt="" />

I had 3 mosquito bites on my right arm and about 10 on my back. I think I might even have a couple behind my ears.

Oooh mosquitoes... one day.... one day....
