For the Dog Father......

None of this was hard work at all for the DF. But, I had to do some work outside today. It was around freezing, but not real cold. I couldn't really wear very warm gloves because of what I was doing. So, in this case I will usually start a small fire outside. I have not done this since getting the DF. So, today was the first day.

I normally have fires all summer long. So, I have a supply of wood that is cut, and split to somewhat decent sizes. But, being that I don't have it covered, some was covered with ice and snow. So, I hade to split it down into smaller pieces. This is the wood I started with.

A couple of pieces had some decent knots in them.

After I got some smaller pieces from the center of pieces, I decided to put some curls on the edges. Normally, at this point I would switch to a smaller knive (like the SS4) that is usually kept scary sharp. But, I wanted to do it all with the DF today. I was actually REALLY surprised at how easy it was to do with this sized knife. The weight of the beast almost created the curls itself. Even in this maple.

I took an after photo, but is not even anything significant to show.

It was a good morning spent outside. My 4 1/2 year old and I even had a smore when we were done <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif" alt="" />

Looks like my DF will be a great choice for motorbike camping this summer.
I don't want to have to carry an axe as space is an issue.

My kids are so spoiled. We do all kinds of stuff. Fishing, camping, hunting, geocahcing. We spend lots of time doing family stuff. I think they will take it for granted until they get older and realize that not everyone does stuff like that.

Unsub:
I don't think there is any issue whatsoever with leaving the hatchet at home. I actually prefer a knife this size even if a hatchet is available. Most of the stuff I do is splitting down wood like this. Batoning lets you be more accurate because you can place it exactly where you want it. Versus hoping you hit where you intended (with a hatchet).

Anyway, thanks for the comments all.
